Fish Technician IV

Yakima Klickitat Fisheries Project (YKFP)

Hourly Wage: $21.11/Regular/Full-Time

Location: Goldendale/Wahkiakus


Fish Technician IV oversees the daily field operations and data collection activities within the work area of the Southern Territories Habitat Project. The broad categories in which a Fish Technician IV works are harvest monitoring, stream sampling, spawner surveys, fish facilities, hatcheries, and other watershed-based field activities.


Examples of Work Performed:

Stream Sampler Supervisory Technician: Responsible for the oversight of all field related activities and research within the Rock Creek Basin and assists with habitat restoration activities for the Southern Territories Habitat Project. Coordinates daily tasks in accordance with project objectives, for example will organize the spawning survey schedule to ensure adequate coverage of survey areas throughout the season. Is responsible for coordinating technician effort in field data collection including daily assignment of tasks. Field data collection activities include spawning ground surveys, backpack electrofishing, field habitat surveys, maintenance and operation of PIT antennas, thermograph download and maintenance, water quality monitoring, and stream flow measurements. Will directly assist biologist(s) with fish sampling activities and quality control of data and will ensure that data collected adheres to established sampling protocols.


Technician will also assist with Southern Territories Habitat Project tasks which may include maintenance and operation of groundwater monitoring stations, project implementation, in-stream structure construction, habitat project prep work and staging, and operation of power equipment such as chainsaws, ATVs, power tools, and other off-road vehicles.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge and completion of training to further technical fisheries skills and people management skills.

Knowledge of various field activities commonly conducted by the fisheries program and has logged numerous field hours as a Fish Technician I, II, or III carrying out these duties.

Knowledge of basic biological understanding of why various field activities are conducted in a specific manner.

Ability to make independent decisions without input from the Fisheries Biologist.

Ability to problem solve and work with minimal supervision.

Ability to supervise Fish Technician I, II, and III.

Ability to maintain effective relationships with employees and the general public.

Ability to demonstrate a genuine interest in the fisheries programs and is active in communicating concerns within the program and communicate positive solutions.


Minimum Requirements:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Three years of experience as a Fish Technician III or equivalent.

Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving Permit.

Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.


Preferred Requirements:

Associates Degree in fisheries or related field.
