We currently have an opening for an entry level Structural Engineer I position to support structural design and engineering work under the direction of lead engineers. Responsibilities will include but not limited to: designing foundations and structures that comply with governing codes and standards; collaborate with other disciplines to identify and design support structures for cable trays, pumps, motors, buildings, etc.; develop project scopes, schedules, and budgets for design related tasks under the direction of licensed engineers; and review design work of designer staff within the department.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Prepare project documentation for review by the lead engineers:
    1. Set up design criteria including code requirements.
    2. Identify all discipline’s requirements for projects and applicable code requirements.
    3. Prepare drawing requirements and a schedule.
  2. Perform site visits with lead engineers to assist with defining scope.
  3. Develop materials specifications for steel, rebar, concrete, and project related items.
  4. Participate in peer drawing design reviews (QA/QC) for structural projects.
  5. Establish structural design models, elements of models and perform analysis.
  6. Utilize structural software to design using basic engineering knowledge and principles.
  7. Under direction, support planning, cost estimating, scheduling, and management activities.
  8. Assist in the development of geotechnical scope and report reviews.
  9. Apply IBC, SPCC, ACI318, AICS 360, ASCE 7 and industry related codes and standards.
  10. Develop and maintain standard designs and templates for foundations and steel structures.
  11. Utilize MS Excel and other software (TEDDS) to perform structural load calculations.
  12. Write and maintain effective clear communication with clients and peers.

Competencies

  1. Must be proficient in AutoCAD 2D and familiar with AutoCAD Steel.
  2. Detail oriented and self-motivated.
  3. Technically competent with basic understanding of the fabrication process for welded and bolted connections using shop tools.
  4. Very good written and verbal communication skills in English.
  5. Problem Solving/Analysis skills and willingness to engage in discussion.

Required Experience and/or Education

  • BS in Structural or Mechanical design from an accredited college or university.
  • Clear understanding of steel sections, beams, sizing, calculation of weights, design, layout and drafting.
