To maintain constant surveillance of all clients and staff in the pool area. Primary duties are to prevent injury and illness from happening, and to act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons, and to provide emergency care and treatment as required in the event of an emergency.

Qualifications
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Must possess valid American Red Cross Lifeguarding & CPR/AED PRO or equivalent certifications.
  • 1-year previous aquatic experience
  • 6 months minimum previous lifeguarding experience
  • Must pass a background check
  • Must act professionally in accordance with our values.
  • Effectively communicate (absences, tardiness, student information requests, supervisors requests, supervisees requests, etc) in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to energetically and enthusiastically embrace an environment of constant learning and growth.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
  • Immediately addresses any situations, activities or behaviors that could lead to injury.
  • Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of EMS.
  • Presents professional appearance (wearing Imagine Lifeguard Tank, red swim trunks, carrying tube with strap on shoulder, wearing rescue hip pack) and attitude at all times, and maintains a high standard of customer service.
  • Remains on deck for the duration of each shift.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned, without allowing secondary duties to interfere with pool surveillance.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with American Red Cross Lifeguarding standards.
  • Enforces pool rules politely, firmly, immediately, and consistently.

General Expectations
  • Must stand and rove at least 70% of time (for example, out of every 10 minutes, walk around for 7 minutes, sit - only in an elevated guard chair - for no more than 3 minutes).
  • Phones, reading material, or any other potential distraction is not allowed on deck. There is ZERO tolerance for having phones on your person while on duty.
  • EAP Signal: Use one LONG, LOUD whistle blast to activate the EAP in case of emergency. Otherwise, whistle use should be avoided except when necessary to prevent injury.
  • Breaks are taken in accordance with Imagine policies, as allowed by the Deck Supervisor (DS). Another Imagine employee with valid Lifeguard & CPR certifications must cover surveillance duties while lifeguard is on break, so that there is no interruption in pool surveillance.

Break Policy
  • For shifts lasting 4 hours or less:
    • Lifeguards do not get a lunch/dinner break. Lifeguards are encouraged to communicate with their DS to take the occasional 5-minute break to help them stay alert, use the toilet, get water, etc., but these breaks should not happen during class changeovers or when the DM is busy. Lifeguards should not take more than one 5 minute break every 90 minutes.
  • Shifts lasting more than 4 hours but less than 6 hours:
    • Lifeguards may choose to take a 30-minute break. The timing of this break must be cleared with the Deck Manager, and this break should not overlap with a class changeover. 5-minute breaks may also be taken as described above.
  • Shifts lasting 6 hours or more:
    • Lifeguards should take a 45-minute lunch/dinner break. The timing of this break must be cleared with the Deck Supervisor, and this break needs to be taken after the Deck Manager has finished switching classes (5-10 minutes after class starts), so that the break doesn't overlap with 2 class changeovers. 5-minute breaks may also be taken as described above.
      • Lifeguards must never leave the pool deck until the DM has taken over pool surveillance and wear the rescue tube and fanny pack.
      • DM (and anyone else for that matter) can only take over pool surveillance duty if their Lifeguarding and CPR certifications are current and on file with Imagine Swimming.
