Overview: At Trimble County Public Library we connect our community with knowledge

The Part Time Program Assistant collaborates with the Programming Team to create
engaging and educational programs for patrons of all ages in order to inspire and
facilitate lifelong learning. May work with partners in the community to plan and carry
out programs outside of the library. The ideal candidate will have experience planning
and carrying out programs for people of all ages, preferably in a library setting and will
be enthusiastic, energetic, friendly, highly motivated and highly organized. Must be
willing to take instruction and perform tasks at the direction of the library director or
programmers.

Immediate Supervisor: Library Director

Positions Directly Supervised: None – but may oversee large programs or program related
tasks, including managing groups of children or adults.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary: 
  • Assists with planning and implementing library programs and activities for adults, teens and
    multi-aged groups,
  • Compiles and tracks statistics on library programs and outreach usage,
  • Promotes library programs and events using appropriate medium such as flyers, posters,
    press releases, website, social media, etc.
  • Maintains the library’s public bulletin boards and displays,
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with individuals and
    agencies serving adults and families,
  • Works assigned hours at front desk as needed, including all related tasks defined in
    the Library Assistant description,
  • Assists customers in the use of library materials and services, including reference and
    readers’ advisory services in-house, at outreach stops and by phone and electronic media,
  • Presents information about library services and programs to individuals and groups,
  • Provide high quality customer service to a diverse public and staff in accordance with
    TCPL’s standards.
Secondary:
  • May assist in programming events or activities led by others,
  • Participate in team meetings to brainstorm, evaluate, plan, and execute library events,
  • May order books/materials for assigned areas,
  • Engage in continuing education opportunities in order to develop and maintain job
    skills,
  • Other duties as assigned. This job description does not necessarily reflect all aspects of the
    job function.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:
  • Broad knowledge of library services and operations and commitment to excellent
    customer service;
  • Ability to work independently, manage time and resources to achieve results, and
    appropriately delegate tasks;
  • Possess strong leadership skills;
  • Ability to analyze issues, and to exercise good judgment to solve problems and make
    decisions;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, in person, by phone, and on-line;
  • Skilled at working cooperatively and collaboratively with customers and staff to achieve
    results;
  • Ability to plan, promote, implement, and evaluate library programs, activities, exhibits,
    and displays;
  • Ability to both follow and give oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to efficiently and accurately use the computer to carry out job responsibilities;
  • Flexible, adaptable, and able to work in a changing environment;
  • Ability to safely and legally drive the library owned outreach vehicle for public service
    stops;
  • Kentucky Department of Library and Archives certification must be obtained
    within the first three months of employment;
  • Criminal Background Check and Drug Test required prior to employment.
Physical Demands: Individuals may need to sit or stand for extended periods. Manual dexterity
to manipulate library materials required. Work extensive hours at the computer screen.
Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required to file documents or
store materials throughout the work day. Ability to do repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy.
Employees may need to carry, push, pull, or lift up to 30 pounds. Proper lifting techniques
required. Push and pull fully loaded (50-100 pounds) book trucks. Ability to work under
pressure, coordinating multiple responsibilities simultaneously, and meet firm deadlines.

Education, Training and Experience: High School diploma or equivalent. Library experience or
coursework in library science, education, communication, information studies, technology or a
related field is strongly preferred. Valid state issued driver’s license and a positive driving record
is required. The new hire would be required to secure and retain state required library
certification.

Status: This is a part-time position, working approximately 20 hours per week and requires
working flexible daytime, evening and weekend hours.
