Role Overview: This position requires the employee to evaluate cytologic material from gynecologic and non-gynecological specimens using independent knowledge and judgement. It also requires participation in the quality control programs of the laboratory, more specifically the federally mandated 10% negative rescreen of all cytotechnologists' work each day. A portion of the role will be screening new material, and a portion will be devoted to rescreening 10% of other cytotechs' work.

Responsibilities:

  • Screen gynecologic specimens and render a diagnosis if the smears are negative for intraepithelial lesion or benign cellular changes associated with inflammation and/or repair. To make a provisional diagnosis on smears considered by the cytotech to be non-diagnostic, atypical, or above and then refer those cases to a pathologist.
  • Screen non-gynecologic smears, rendering a provisional diagnosis and referring all non-gynecologic cases on to a pathologist.
  • Participate in the Quality Control federal and state mandate requirement of 10% rescreen of all cytotechnologist's work each day.
  • Verify slides with requisitions by name and accession number, resulting and verifying reports in computer system, returning slides to processing area and requisitions to records area.
  • Participate in continuing education programs in the laboratory - CAP (Interlaboratory Comparison Program), ASCP (Check Path), scope sessions, interlaboratory CME programs.
  • Participate in quality assurance programs within the laboratory - data gathering, monitoring of procedures, statistical evaluations, total quality team participation.
  • Assist in specimen preparation in both Cytology Processing and Non Gyn area, cytology clerical duties as needed to facilitate the workflow.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a very good command of all areas of cytology as reflected by the educational requirement --screening evaluation, judgment, processing. (3+ years of cytotechnologist experience preferred).
  • ASCP Certification Required.
  • Eyesight and visual dexterity must be such that would enable the cytotech to do microscope work 90% of the time.
  • Must be able to sit while doing the microscopic evaluations for at least one-hour intervals, breaking each hour from the microscope and sitting position, then returning to the microscope and sitting position, maintaining this routine throughout the eight-hour workday/night.
  • Must have the knowledge and manual dexterity to be able to use a microscope.
  • Must have computer skills enough to be able to inquire about the laboratory programs for patient information.
  • Must have good communication skills, self-motivator and take initiative for extra job duties.
