POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The ESL Teacher at the Arlington-Mansfield Area YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals. This employee is responsible for providing support to our Global and Local Engagement strategy to assist our members and neighbors to continue to meet their well-being goals. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Teaching English to Spanish speaking participants:
    • Develop lesson plans and curricula tailored to individual students or classes or follow an existing program.
    • Conduct conversational classes focusing on pronunciation, essential words, and phrases.
    • Teach writing and English composition.
    • Stay updated on effective teaching methods, materials, and language games.
    • Prepare students for oral and written assessment.
  2. Administrative Tasks:
    • Monitor student progress by writing reports.
    • Organize feedback sessions with students.
    • Provide suggestions for further learning for struggling students.
  3. Cultural Education:
    • Educate students about American culture, including festivals, traditional food, dress, and social conventions.
    • Encourage students to participate in YMCA fun events, programs and membership where students can connect with other English speakers.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 18 years old and have a minimum of a high school diploma/GED.
  • Must be available to work in an office setting as determined by class schedule.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Computer skills required; excellent telephone etiquette required.
  • Must have a working knowledge of office equipment.
  • Organization and analytical skills and attention to detail are a must.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Must be highly organized.
  • Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • Must be a team player who is willing to assist others in a variety of capacities.
  • CPR/AED/O2/First Aid certifications and Child Abuses Prevention, Anti-Harassment, Blood Borne Pathogens, Hazard Communication Awareness, and Slips, Trips, and Falls trainings required.
