JOB PURPOSE AND SUMMARY:

The Oncology Institute (TOI) is looking for a dedicated, compassionate, and agile Medical Assistant Scribe to join our outpatient oncology clinic. As a key member of the patient care team, the Medical Assistant Scribe provides administrative and clinical support to enable the seamless operation of the clinic.

The ideal candidate will deliver compassionate patient care, support efficient clinic operations, and contribute to an exceptional patient experience. This position will be cross-trained and responsible for medical documentation, administrative support, and direct patient care tasks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES:

  • Live and exemplify TOI core values, providing outstanding customer service and promoting a positive experience for patients and staff members.
  • Accurately document patient encounters, including histories, symptoms, examinations, procedures, and follow-up care in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Assist healthcare providers during patient examinations by recording and documenting appropriate patient information.
  • Greet and prepare patients for examinations. Gather health history, take appropriate vital signs such as patient height, weight, and blood pressure, and review current medications.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient medical records, including demographic, current medications and/or labs, allergies, insurance, and prescription information.
  • Facilitate communication between healthcare providers, medical staff, patients, and families.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, answering phone calls, completing patient registration, and collecting payments. Assist with coding and billing, as needed.
  • Manage patient care flow and help to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Assist with inventory organization and stocking of exam rooms and labs.
  • Maintain and protect confidentiality of all organizational and patient information.
  • Participate in staff huddles and meetings.
  • Assist other clinic locations, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency in using electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare documentation.
  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy.

  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to HIPAA regulations.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND/OR TRAINING:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a Medical Assistant program from an accredited educational institute is required. Medical Assistant Certificate preferred.
  • Previous experience working as a Medical Assistant, Medical Scribe, or related position in an outpatient clinic/medical office setting is required.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

PHYSICAL WORKING REQUIREMENTS:

This position involves prolonged periods of standing and walking, performance of precise tasks like drawing blood and administering medications, and occasionally, lifting of up to 50 pounds. Clear vision and acute hearing are essential for reading charts and monitoring patients. Strong communication skills and attention to detail are critical, especially under stress. Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and repetitive tasks are also required, along with sensitivity to patient needs and environmental changes.
