Director of Resident Life

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Resident Life is a 12-month full-time position responsible for leading dynamic co-curricular student learning and engagement experiences for resident students. It is responsible for the areas of Residence Life. The Director seeks to enhance the growth and development of resident students by providing social, cultural, recreational, spiritual, and co-curricular educational experiences. This position collaborates with other Division staff, aligning student programs and services to create an intentional, holistic student experience.
The Director is responsible for developing and managing a comprehensive residential education program promoting the pursuit of academic excellence, personal growth, and integrity aligned with USM’s Mission and Core Values of Justice, Excellence, Community, and Respect. This position supervises the Residence Life staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Residence Life
- Develop and maintain policies and procedures for managing all on-campus residence housing and all USM-sponsored off-campus contract housing.
- Creates and executes Residence Life’s vision, mission, and values through participation in strategic planning, department goal setting, and determining hall staffing priorities and initiatives.
- Responsible for providing responsive and adaptive leadership to the University’s Residence Assistance (RA) program. This includes directly supervising the RA positions and one Residence Life Graduate Assistant.
- Responsible for developing and facilitating professional development opportunities for Residence Life staff, RA selection, training programs, and a residential curriculum incorporating a relational community-building model centered on USM’s Core Values.
- Review, research, and evaluate all aspects of community development to ensure best practices are being implemented in policies, programs, and procedures designed to meet residential student needs.
- Align residential activities to learning outcomes/goals and prepare assessment measures and reports.
- Manage and supervise summer operations, including management and staffing oversight for summer camps, conferences, workshops, and student housing.
- Lead resident hall opening and closing planning processes according to scheduled building usage.
- Monitor and track community development activities
- Advocate for facilities enhancements that promote the holistic development of students; work with staff to determine appropriate needs and improvements.
- Considers parents/family members as partners in the growth and development of residential students; provides timely follow-up via e-mail or phone with parents/family members regarding their students’ USM experiences.
- Develops and implements student leadership development curriculum, programs, and learning outcome-driven initiatives for student leaders.
- Create strategic goals and metrics to support measuring success, leadership development, capacity building, and student learning.
- Enhances, develops, and oversees programs that support historically under-represented populations and student affinity groups.
- Utilizes discretion and independent judgment when interacting with USM students, faculty, staff, USM family members, and local community members, exhibiting USM’s core values of excellence, respect, justice, and community in all actions.
- Disseminate necessary information and resources for central residential programming.
- Develops areas’ budgets; provides staff with budgetary decisions, planning, and implementation information.
- Develop and maintain a disaster housing accommodation plan should on-campus housing become unavailable.
- Communicate area and departmental trends, concerns, and achievements regularly.
- Develop positive working relationships with other campus departments, agencies, and resources that serve students.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge and implements/continues best practices related to student leadership development, diversity, equality, inclusion, and residence life.
- Assists the Director of Student Engagement when requested.
- Other job-related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred in the field of education, business, student development, higher education, or other related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of the diverse community – its needs, trends, and scholarship
- Demonstrated experience with successful diversity-related initiatives
- Ability to work a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and demonstrate good judgment and compassion
- Ability to work with minimal direction, be a good problem solver, work well in teams, and effectively manage frequent changes in work assignments
- Ability to think intentionally and strategically, be highly collaborative, with strong implementation and follow-up skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, colleagues, and other stakeholders;
- Demonstrated organizational ability
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work successfully with multiple demands, shifting priorities, and a changing landscape
