SUMMARY: The Dentist will understand and model the mission of NSO. The Dentist will understand and practice NSO’s policy on confidentiality in respect to all NSO information. The Dentist will exhibit professional behavior in all facets of work at NSO. The Dentist will exhibit teamwork with all NSO staff.
In an ambulatory care setting, the Dentist assesses patient needs, and plans and delivers direct dental care and associated services to patients. The Dentist will utilize established dental regimens, protocol, and procedures in the practice of dentistry.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides basic and emergency dental care including dental exams, root canals, fixed prosthodontics, removable prosthodontics, restorations, extractions, biopsy, alveoloplasty.
- Provides patient screening procedures, such as assessment of oral health conditions, review of the health history, oral cancer screening, head and neck inspection, and dental charting.
- Provides patient education and home care instructions after dental procedures.
- Counsel’s patients about good nutrition and its impact on oral health.
- Assures quality dental services.
- Assures appropriate referrals for patients.
- Serves as a preceptor dentist for the OU College of Dentistry; supervising 4th year dental students to develop their practical dental skills.
- Participates in communication with volunteer dentists in the NSO dental program.
- Reports pertinent observations and patient reactions to dental director as appropriate
- In absence of Dental Director, provide clinical direction to dental clinic staff and report any issues or concerns to the appropriate party in a timely manner.
- Ensures that appropriate safety and regulatory measures are followed.
- Participates in NSO staff meetings and clinic meetings.
- Performs related work as required or directed.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Maintain a valid, current and unrestricted license to practice Dentistry in the State of Oklahoma.
- Meets the requirements of OU College of Dentistry to serve as a preceptor dentist.
- Experience working with the homeless and underserved population preferred.
- Five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Maintain a valid, current and unrestricted license or registration to prescribe drugs, medications, pharmaceuticals and/or controlled substances
- Maintain a valid policy of insurance, professional liability coverage.
- Must have a PMP account (Prescription Monitoring Program), in place.
- Must possess a valid Healthcare Provider CPR certification.
- Clearance of background check and drug screen.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Requires clear, oral, and written communication skills.
- Considerable knowledge of dental terminology and charting practices.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of dental health promotion and prevention.
- Knowledge of Federal and OSHA regulations for dental clinics.
- Intermediate computer skills with knowledge of Eaglesoft software and digital x-rays preferred.
- Requires ability to work independently as well as with a team.
- Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to be culturally sensitive to the needs of the medically indigent.
- Ability to respond to new client needs.
- Ability to work effectively in a dynamic clinic environment and to handle multiple demands and responsibilities.
- Thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of Dentistry.
- Cognizant of prescription drugs commonly used in Dentistry and aware of possible side effects.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- The majority of time spent in this position is in a well-lit, heated and/or air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation.
- Work very near other people and have little space between self and others.
- May risk exposure to radiation
- May risk exposure to biohazards and communicable diseases.
- Work is performed primarily sitting and sometimes must get into awkward positions to reach patients’ teeth.
- Frequent walking is required.
- May occasionally be placed in conflict situations in which others may be rude or unpleasant.
- Occasional periods of high stress.
