Ready for a summer of fun in the sun? Work at J Camp at the Stroum Jewish Community Center (SJCC) Camp Counselors work with their peers to lead a group of campers through fun activities, field trips, and special events. Campers range in age from 4 to 15 and camp themes include technology, cooking, stem, camping, vet school, and more Camp runs from June 24 through August 23, and staff can work anywhere from 3 to 9 weeks. Camp is a great way to have fun, make money, gain job experience, and build your resume. Counselors can make $6,500 in their first year


A Counselor's primary role is to make sure camp is a fun and safe space, in addition to the following:

  • Assume responsibility for a group of campers and work to create a positive and safe experience at camp.
  • Actively participate in and supervise activities alongside campers.
  • Plan and lead camp activities.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety including proper hydration, water safety, and sunscreen.
  • Support the emotional and social well-being of campers through positive behavior management and supportive interactions. Facilitate conflict resolution within camp group as needed.
  • Supervise campers during field trips, including while on the bus.
  • Follow all emergency procedures at the SJCC.
  • Uphold the diversity, equity and inclusion values and practices of the SJCC by ensuring that all materials, activities, and interactions are sensitive to, and reflective of, the diverse populations we serve.
  • Attend required staff training and meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.


Education/Experience:

  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification for adults/children/infants, or willing to take courses before the start of camp (training will be offered through the J).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and respectfully with diverse populations.
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety practices.
  • Ability to coach and empower campers, counselors in training, and fellow staff members.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries with campers, team members, and supervisors.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a team setting.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment.

Additional Employment Requirements:

  • Satisfactorily pass a criminal background check.

Compensation and Benefits Include:

  • Full Family SJCC Membership which includes gym, basketball court and pool. (Employees who work 20+ hours)

  • Washington Paid Sick Leave (Part-time, on call, seasonal employees)
  • Washington State Pay Range: $18.00/hour to $ 20.00/hour
  • Actual compensation within the pay range will be decided based on factors including but not limited to, skills, relevant experience, and specific work location.
