The Weed Superintendent is responsible for assisting taxpayers on weed control issues and plant identification and enforcing State Weed Laws. Additionally, this position prepares and submits all required annual reports to the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.

Essential Job Functions

  • See that the Nebraska Noxious Weed Act and rules and regulations promulgated by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture are being complied with.
  • Compile such data on infested, non-infested, and controlled acres as the Director of Agriculture or the Control Authority may require.
  • Consult and advise upon matters pertaining to the best and most practical methods of noxious weed control and make a recommendation as to the method of control, amount, and type of pesticide needed if warranted.
  • Investigate or aid in the investigation and prosecution of any violation of the Weed Act
  • Supervise the carrying out of coordinated weed control programs within the County.
  • Physically inspect the lands in Dawson County for noxious weeds.
  • Investigate complaints on weed species.
  • Calibrate various sprayers; map areas of infestations.
  • Complete the required reports annually; prepare a budget annually.
  • Issue public notices concerning infestations and disseminate reports.
  • Issue individual and quarantine reports when necessary.
  • Attend meetings and conferences regarding the control of noxious weeds.
  • Attend regular Weed Board Meetings
  • Complete twenty (20) hours of continuing education, annually.
  • Obtain a resolution from the Weed Board for this position to issue individual notices.
  • Publish the general notice on or before May 1 and between August 1 and October 1.
  • Meet with the Farm Service Agency each year to discuss noxious weed CRP locations.
  • Renew pesticide dealer's license.
  • Check SDS and chemical labels for current dates.
  • Check and order equipment and supplies for weed buildings and trucks.
  • Select and order chemicals for spraying noxious weeds.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Preferred Talents

  • Thorough knowledge and skill in the operation, maintenance, and use of trucks and off-road utility equipment.
  • Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees and the public.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A valid state of Nebraska motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record.
  • Hold a Commercial Nebraska Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator License with Categories 01 Agricultural Pest Control Plant, and 07 -Right-of-Way Pest Control.

Physical Requirements

Physical strength and agility sufficient to operate automotive equipment and off-road equipment for long hours under varying conditions. Operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment requires that an incumbent be able to perform repetitive hand, wrist, shoulder, and leg movements, as well as bend, climb, and crawl into, under, and out of vehicles.

Working Environment

The work environment is sometimes noisy, dusty, hot, or cold and work is performed in a variety of outdoor environments.
