Primary Position Objectives

The UWC-USA program - a two-year experience that integrates our Academic, UWC CAS, and Residential curricula - prepares students to serve as catalysts for greater unity, peace and sustainability in the world. We support students in the practice of our mission during their two years on campus and challenge them to live our mission for a lifetime.

The Auditorium Sound & Theatre Tech contributes to the school's mission across our full program. The Auditorium Sound & Theatre Tech is responsible for the management of the Auditorium, lighting, sound and stage management during the academic year at UWC-USA. It is important that the Auditorium Sound & Theatre Tech be familiar with the campus, its equipment, policies, programs, and services and the day-to-day schedule of events. The Tech will lead the Student Tech team, and help to build curriculum. They will also help repair and replace equipment. In addition to these responsibilities, they support other programming areas in formal or informal ways. The Auditorium Sound & Theatre Tech fulfills their responsibilities in accord with the UWC mission and values as well as the school's strategic plan, foundational documents, IBDP authorization, ISAS accreditation and best practices in teaching and learning.

The Auditorium Sound & Theatre Tech is employed on a 10-month agreement that runs from 1 August to 31 May. Their summer and winter holiday travel plans should not interfere with their professional obligations at the beginning of August, mid December, early January, and late May.

Position Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Brief Description of Duties

Equipment/Space Management

  • Manages inventory of all sound and stage tech equipment
  • Ensures all equipment is stored safely and is secured when not in use
  • Manages check-out system for student use of theatre and sound equipment
  • Liaises with IT staff over software requirements and system support
  • Manages shop facilities and supervise shop use
  • Takes responsibility for all technical areas within the school's auditorium and events spaces
  • Provides first-line maintenance support for all relevant technical equipment, machines, furniture, fixtures and fittings
  • Submits requests for upgrades and repairs to the appropriate department (IT, Maintenance, and the Arts and Culture Manager)

Production Support

  • Provides appropriate proactive and creative technical production support for the school's performances and activities
  • Provides sound engineering management for special events
  • Co-directs the recording and engineering of studio recording, live performances and special events
  • Supervises theater set production for performances and oversee student use of equipment for set construction

Experiential Education

  • Supervises the Sound Tech and Music Technology courses
  • Supervises the Stage Tech and Lighting Tech courses
  • Ensures adequate student training emphasizing safety and skill building
  • Works across multiple teams to support the delivery of a number of artistic and academic activities
  • Attends event planning meetings as necessary

Health & Safety

  • Ensures all health and safety requirements are met for the use of the performance spaces and produce risk assessments for all theatre / event space activities
  • Regularly updates and advises all users (including students) of the theaters and event spaces on the safe use of the area and equipment
  • Organizes annual safety checks of all technical equipment, machines, furniture, fixtures and fittings

Leadership

  • All UWC-USA employees are expected to provide varying levels of leadership in order to support the UWC mission. Examples include but are not limited to:
    • Actively participating and contributing to committee or task force assignments, providing leadership in campus-wide events or initiatives, strategic planning efforts, in the experiential education program, the dormitories, dining hall, and/or in physical plant initiatives.
    • Initiating strategic discussions and sharing thoughtful and innovative ideas with your co-workers for carrying out the UWC mission and successfully completing day to day work assignments.
    • Demonstrating a growth mindset by believing and acknowledging that intelligence, skills, learning and creativity can all grow with time and experience.

Position Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Strong, proven experience in stage / production management
  • Strong, proven experience and/or qualification in sound and lighting design
  • Up to date knowledge of lighting systems, control apparatus, equipment and its maintenance
  • Up to date knowledge of digital audio and audio-visual equipment and its use in relation to live, recorded and play-back techniques
  • An enthusiasm for working with and advising young people in technical theater and production
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to communicate clearly and consistently with all theater and event space users, especially non-technical users
  • Highly organized with successful experience in meeting tight deadlines under pressure and managing conflicting priorities
  • Experience in implementing health and safety requirements and risk assessments
  • Confident in working independently but also willing to collaborate across many departments
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and some weekends; Able to work an irregular schedule, including intensive periods of work around key events in the auditorium.
  • Attention to detail.

Educational/License Requirements

  • An Associate's Degree plus 3 or more years successful experience in theater production and sound management, or equivalent experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with the UWC movement is a plus
