Position Purpose:


JWCH is seeking a motivated candidate with supervision or management experience for the full-time position of Peer Support Specialist Supervisor. The Supervisor will perform a variety of duties associated with the Peer Support program and serve as a mentor and support for Peer Support staff. This innovative program aims to augment and enhance our existing Behavioral Health, Mental Health, and Substance Use Disorder programs at over 20 sites in Southern California. The qualified individual will report to one of our Licensed Behavioral Health Clinicians and work with a specialized treatment team consisting of Psychiatrists, Psychiatric Mid-Levels, LCSWs, Case Managers, Substance Use Counselors, and primary care providers. The Peer Support Specialist Supervisor will help develop this program from the ground up and oversee a staff of at least 6 Peer Support Counselors located at various clinics and programs in LA County.

Principle Responsibilities:

  1. Interviews hires, and trains qualified Peer Support Counselors.
  2. Provides initial and ongoing training for staff.
  3. Assist in preparing non-certified staff with guidance and training to become certified and
  4. helps develop an Internal Training program to prepare candidates for Certification.
  5. Draws upon own personal recovery experience and mental health/substance use
  6. challenges as a basis for training staff and engagement strategies with clients as peers.
  7. Provides a supportive learning environment in which staff can develop skills on how to provide clients and their families with coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills to help them achieve desired outcomes.
  8. Develop and educate Peer Support Specialist to lead groups to promote skill building for the clients in the areas of socialization, recovery, self-sufficiency, self-advocacy, development of natural supports, and maintenance of skills learned in other support services.
  9. Lead and train staff to facilitate activities and coaching to encourage and support clients to participate in behavioral health/substance use disorder treatment. Engagement may include supporting clients in their transitions between levels of care and supporting clients in developing their own recovery goals and processes.
  10. Develop and lead structured non-clinical activity to promote recovery, wellness, self-advocacy, relationship enhancement, development of natural supports, self-awareness and values, and the maintenance of community living skills to support the beneficiary’s treatment to attain and maintain recovery within their communities.
  11. These activities may include but are not limited to, advocacy on behalf of the client; promotion of self-advocacy; resource navigation; and collaboration with the clients and others providing care or support to the clients, family members, or significant support persons.
  12. Educate and train Peer Support Specialist to assist clients with voicing their strengths, interests and goals throughout their services including goal planning, crisis recovery planning, etc.
  13. Educates staff to help clients learn and navigate community supports and resources.
  14. Educate staff on how to assist clients with all needs including activities of daily living.
  15. Participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings.
  16. Meet outcome expectations outlined in any grants, funding sources, or licensing agencies.
  17. Complete all documentation in NextGen or otherwise.
  18. Document and report unusual occurrences, incidents, and injuries.
  19. Respond promptly and appropriately to emergencies.
  20. Always maintain client confidentiality.

Requirements:

  1. Completed a DHCS-approved peer support supervisory training curriculum and meet at least one of the below qualifications:
    1. Have a Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Certification Program certification and two years of experience working in the behavioral health system.
    2. Have worked as a non-peer behavioral health professional (including registered and certified SUD counselors) in the behavioral health system for a minimum of two years.
    3. Have a high school diploma or GED and four years of behavioral health direct service experience that may include peer support services.
  2. Must take a DHCS-approved peer support supervisory training within 60 days of beginning to supervise Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialists and ongoing training incorporated into their continuing education requirements.
  3. Have at least 2 years supervising and managing Peer Support Specialist.
  4. Knowledge about harm reduction, motivational interviewing, strengths-based care, participant-centered care, and trauma-informed care.
  5. Have experience with evidence-based short-term behavioral health interventions.
  6. Able to document using Nextgen or other EMR for all services in an accurate, thorough, and timely manner.
  7. Evidence of clear criminal record and proof of valid California Driver’s License.

Preferred:

  1. Bilingual (English/Spanish) ability preferred.
  2. Demonstrates effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  3. Ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of the impact of trauma on behavioral and medical conditions.
  5. Able to consistently maintain agency productivity standards.
