Overview: The maintenance oiler plays a vital role in assisting the maintenance and engineering departments in maintaining mechanical equipment. The primary function of an oiler is to apply lubricants to the various parts of a machine to keep it working properly. Some oilers may also handle other maintenance duties that involve adjusting and inspecting mechanical equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Replacing used lubricants with new ones to ensure optimal performance of machinery for long periods of time.
  • Monitoring the equipment’s temperature levels to ensure that it does not overheat or overcool.
  • Inspecting fluid levels, temperatures, pressures, and other parameters to ensure that equipment is working properly.
  • Cleaning machinery parts and equipment to remove buildup of dirt and grime.
  • Inspecting equipment for signs of wear or damage and reporting problems to the appropriate parties for repair or replacement.
  • Changing oil filters, replacing oil filters, and adding new oil to vehicles as needed.
  • Monitoring oil levels in engines to ensure that they do not run low or overheat.
  • Inspecting equipment for signs of wear or damage and reporting problems to the appropriate parties for repair or replacement.
  • Monitoring, recording, and maintaining inventories using the Lube on Hand chart.
  • Removing empty drums to assigned area.
  • Completing Oil Consumption sheet denoting machine number, clock hours (digital), type of oil and gallons used.
  • Cleaning work area, machines, tools, and equipment.
  • Performing other duties as requested.

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Minimum one to six months related experience and/or training.

Key Competencies

Communication Skills:

  • Ability to effectively communicate with others both written and verbally.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Computer Skills:

  • Ability to navigate basic technology including but not limited to use of digital self-service platforms, time clocks and other systems where applicable.

Additional Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Ability to interpret and apply written and numerical information from a drawing or blueprint.

· Ability to use of measuring instruments (tape, scale, squares etc.).

  • Satisfactory completion of the Bennett Mechanical Aptitude Test.
  • Ability to work as a team or independently.
  • Ability to work all shifts to gain exposure to and experience with all maintenance and operational conditions.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Required to pass an industry-specific certification.

Physical Demands:

  • Stand, walk, push, pull, squat, bend, and reach during shifts.
  • Use carts, dollies, cranes, and jacks to transport material if needed.
  • Must be able to regularly lift and or move up to 40lbs.
  • Tolerate potentially extreme temperature fluctuations impacted by weather and machinery.
  • Acclimate to high noise and vibration levels in workspaces.
  • Wear and adhere to all PPE guidelines including hard hats, protective eye wear, ear plugs, and approved footwear with metatarsal and steel toe safeguards.
  • Comfortable working in confined work environments.

Work Environment:

The Maintenance Oiler interacts with historic machinery throughout the facility which often involves proximity to heat, noise, debris, conveyance systems and other potentially dangerous equipment. The Senior Machinist may encounter high levels of floor and overhead traffic due to material transportation within the department which can cause high levels of vibration and airborne disturbances.
