Position Summary: The primary role of a postgraduate technical assistant is to provide technical and project administrative support on a wide range of GASB activities. That technical support is intended to enhance the effectiveness of the standards-setting process and typically includes conducting basic research, analyzing and summarizing various technical information, communicating the results of staff research and analysis, and assisting in the development of alternative solutions and staff recommendations on technical issues, and in the incorporation of the Board’s decisions into drafts of GASB publications.

Position Responsibilities:

Planning and Completion of Work

  1. Complete assigned tasks, activities, projects in the time allotted. Promptly notify direct report of any delays.
  2. Comply with project management policies and procedures described in the RTA Manual and GASB Rules of Procedure, including due process and interaction with FAF support functions.
B. Technical Research and Analysis
  1. At direction of project manager, conduct research activities including (a) performing surveys of current practice, (b) analyzing comment letters, (b) researching existing governmental accounting standards and related FASB, IPSASB, and FASAB literature, and (c) gathering and summarizing information from GASAC members, task force and advisory committee members, and other constituents.
  2. At direction of project manager, prepare an analysis of research to be used in materials for education sessions and/or Board meetings.
C. Communications
  1. Participate in the discussion at Board meetings and education sessions
  2. Draft Board materials that are clear and concise and prepared in accordance with the RTA Manual and the GASB Style Manual.
  3. Develop or update research and project communications in accordance with the communication guidelines included in the RTA Manual.

D. Other Accountabilities

  1. Develop a broad knowledge of governmental accounting and develop technical expertise in the areas encompassed by technical assignments.
  2. Other assignments may include interviewing postgraduate technical assistant candidates and assisting with non-technical activities, including research and project administration activities.

  1. Technical Knowledge and Analytical Skills
    1. Candidates must be nominated by a member of their schools’ accounting department and must be a recent graduate or about to graduate from either a master’s in accounting or a double major. Candidates must have the following:
    2. An outstanding academic record
    3. Completed course work that provides a thorough knowledge of accounting theory and practice.
    4. Strong interest in the theoretical aspects of accounting
    5. Critical thinking skills and creativity
    6. Strong oral and written communication skills, in particular superior writing ability is essential
    7. Experience with personal computers; specifically, Microsoft Office and other various types of software, hardware and the nature and degree of exposure
  2. Personal Characteristics
  1. Ability to work in a team-oriented environment
  2. Possess strong time management skills, and be able to prioritize multiple assignments.
  3. Maturity, motivation, and leadership
  4. Career interest in financial reporting or government accounting preferred

Graduate or undergraduate degree in accounting or public administration (graduate degree preferred, but not required).
