This position is responsible for the operation and direction of the City’s Gone with the Wind Museum and Brumby Hall and Gardens event facility. As museum director, this position manages the collection, supervises all museum and venue staff and volunteers, and oversees business operations.  Other areas of responsibility include marketing, advertising, strategic planning, and executing promotional events.
 
  • Manages the daily operation of the Gone with the Wind Museum and gift shop.  Related management functions include: 
    • Responsible for the financial operations of the museum including making budget recommendations, tracking revenues and expenditures, supervising purchasing, inventory control and cash balancing of monies received from gift shop sales and museum tickets. 
    • Supervises museum staff and enforces operating policies and procedures, including hiring, onboarding, performance evaluations, and discipline. Trains staff on a variety of functions including guided tours for adults and school groups and historical information related to the museum items/displays and building.
    • Serves as a liaison between the City and the collection owner and coordinates new acquisitions and exhibit changes.
    • Ensures the security of all museum items and monies collected. Develops security policies and procedures. Reports any security concerns to the Assistant City Manager for Economic and Project Development.
    • Ensures that the museum is kept presentable throughout each business day and brings forward maintenance recommendations.
    • Maintains an inventory of all items included in the museum and provides condition reports to the collection owner. Approves orders and inventory for the gift shop and supplies for daily operation of museum.
    • Prepares the annual tourism grant request on behalf of the museum and makes a presentation to City Council.
  • Serves as the primary marketing and promotion official for the GWTW museum. Marketing and promotion activities to include:
  • Serves as the main point of contact for the museum to a variety of entities including the public, tour groups, estates, tourism agencies and partner organizations.
  • Develops and implements marketing strategies over a variety of mediums.
  • Liaise with Visit Marietta, Downtown Marietta Development Authority, Cobb Travel and Tourism, and other relevant entities to ensure the GWTW museum has promotional exposure.
  • Plans and executes promotional events that support the mission of the museum.
  • Oversees and updates the GWTW website.
  • Cultivates and maintains relationships with those in the Gone with the Wind community.
  • Provides lectures at requests of civic and private organizations.
  • Responsible for the operation of Brumby Gardens as an event venue:
    • Develops strategic marketing plans to promote the use of the gardens for events.
    • Develops and implements operational plans and procedures for event rentals.
    • Oversees the scheduling of events including arranging necessary furniture and equipment and assignment of staff.
    • Oversees client relationships to make pricing, expectations, and protocols clear.
    • Works with the Parks, Recreation, and Facilities staff to initiate needed maintenance and repairs.
  • Performs other related duties as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:
 
  • BS/BA degree in business/public administration, or related field and three years related business operations management experience, including supervisory, cash management, and marketing in a museum/exhibition, retail gift shop, events management, or related businesses or an equivalent combination of education and experience.         
  • Excellent verbal communication skills to include customer relations and promotional sales. 
  • Knowledge and skill using a personal computer and programs including the Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe products, and design software.
  • Knowledge of finance, business, bookkeeping, budgeting, point of sale practices, and gift shop inventory management; ability to train staff in operation of same.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed.
  • Ability to supervise, train and evaluate museum staff.
  • Must be bondable and have a satisfactory credit and criminal background check.
