Position Summary:

As a CAHOOTS Medic, you work alongside a crisis worker as part of a two-person crisis intervention team. The medic works in close collaboration with the crisis worker to provide holistic, trauma-informed care. The medic conducts medical assessments, provides EMT-B level medical care, and gives referrals to other social service providers.

Position Responsibilities

Work CAHOOTS mobile crisis intervention shifts throughout Eugene and Springfield as dispatched by 911 or other resources.

Continuously builds and maintains positive relationships with community members, community partners, and clients.

Assume primary responsibility for making medical assessments of clients and for providing medical care within the EMT-B scope of practice in accordance with CAHOOTS protocols and standing orders.

Make appropriate referrals and resource recommendations to services in the community.

Appropriately document all client interactions according to White Bird policy.

Maintain necessary certifications as an EMT-B, at a minimum.

Attend required department and clinic meetings and share in other responsibilities as relevant.

Complete and maintain all required trainings training and certifications, including defensive driver training through the City of Eugene as arranged by White Bird Clinic, as well as CJIS and comprehensive State required background checks.

Be commissioned by the City of Eugene as a Transportation Officer to perform the duties set forth in OARs (Oregon Administrative Rules) 430.399, i.e., to decide whether to transport an intoxicated person to a treatment facility. In no case will CAHOOTS transport anyone over their expressed objections.

Complete White Bird's New Volunteer Training within four months of hire.

Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

Active license as an EMT or RN.

Must be able to pass a stringent criminal background check and driving record review, both conducted by the Eugene Police Department.

Must be able to comply with all state, local, and federal laws and regulations.

Current CPR certification (or completed within thirty (30) days of hire

Complete White Bird's 'Basic Crisis' class within 1 year of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluent or conversational in American Sign Language or Spanish.
  • Two years of experience providing health services in non-traditional settings.
  • Knowledge about humanistic, client-centered approaches.
  • Experience with harm reduction and/or restorative justice practices.
  • Excellent verbal communication and active listening skills, including skills in building rapport with clients and community partners, and communicating effectively with co-workers.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative and dynamic environment.
  • Ability to give and receive feedback with grace and compassion.

Key Competencies:

Ability to work effectively with a diverse population including impoverished and alienated persons.

Ability to drive and repeatedly climb in and out of a commercial van

Ability to operate a cell phone, two-way radio, police radio, and laptop computer

Ability to occasionally lift at least 50 lbs.

Compensation Details:

This is a non-exempt position with a target starting base compensation of $22 per hour paid on a bi-weekly basis.
