Oakland, United States Square Full time
Job DescriptionJob DescriptionCompany Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality through Afterpay, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

Job Description

Our Square Quality Automation team is the backbone that ensures our products meet the highest standards of quality and reliability across all Square Mobile and web platforms. Starting with the elegant Square Reader, which converts any phone or tablet into a mobile point-of-sale system, we've expanded our hardware lineup to address a variety of seller needs. This includes the Square Register and Square Terminal, both of which offer fully integrated point-of-sale systems ready to use straight out of the box.

Beyond hardware, our team plays a critical role in maintaining quality across all Square products, including software and services. We are responsible for creating and implementing automated testing solutions that cover a broad spectrum of platforms—mobile (iOS and Android), web, and real hardware environments. Our testing processes are designed to mirror real-world scenarios, ensuring that the user experience is seamless and dependable.

We are looking for a Software Engineer to help establish continuous integration (CI) automation for our Square Mobile products. In this role, you will collaborate with the Product Delivery, Quality Systems, and Developer Experience teams to build robust automated tests. Your work will be crucial in maintaining the high standards of quality that our customers expect from Square. You will report directly to our SWE Lead and contribute significantly to the overall footprint of our Quality Automation team by developing innovative solutions that enhance our testing capabilities and improve product reliability.

You will:

  • Identify, scope, and lead complex, strategic projects with wide impact across the company

  • Gather functional and technical requirements and translate them into detailed architecture and designs

  • Design highly available, and resilient systems which can operate no matter the network or device conditions

  • Collaborate with multiple stakeholders across the company including product, design, legal, support, and other engineering teams

  • Own the definition and execution of the overall automation test strategy for Square Mobile products including iOS and Android.

  • Move up and down the stack and become an expert on how applications, systems, and services are integrated.

  • Partner with other development teams to create interfaces to enable product testability.

  • Design, implement and maintain software test automation code to expand, stabilize, and mature product test automation framework on all Square Mobile products.

  • Participate in all product development phases from requirements to production.

  • Communicate clear recommendations to product owners and stakeholders based on defined test goals, acceptance criteria, and identified risks.

  • Work on automation of performance initiatives for Square HW products.

Qualifications

Must have:

  • 5+ years of test engineering and/or software engineering experience, preferably on consumer electronics products or mobile products.

  • Deep understanding of how Mobile (iOS or Android) platform automation frameworks work

  • Proficient  in Java/ kotlin or Python or any programming language.

  • Designed and implemented an automated test framework for a complex functional area.

  • Motivation to influence our engineering organization to level-up the reliability and performance of the mobile apps we ship.

  • Proven a strong aptitude for learning new technologies with a good instinct for discovering defects in firmware, software, and hardware.

  • Developed with a focus on testability or for the purpose of performing automated tests.

  • Mentored junior engineers on SW development methodologies and best practices.

  • Clear written and spoken communication skills.

  • Experience working collaboratively on a cross-functional team.

Nice to  have:

  • Tools skill XCUI test, swift, Kotlin, Trade Federation, UI Automator, Xcode

  • Experience in working and developing tests with emulators

  • Experience optimizing and designing large scale performance tests for Android and iOS applications

  • Experience working in a large engineering organization (hundreds of mobile engineers)
