Job Description

Summary/objective

Responsible for operating press breaks on machine. Fits and fabricates structural steel, completes layout, and inspects finished product.

A lathe operator works with machinery to fabricate metal for the manufacturing industry. The duties include programming, monitoring, and operating a lathe machine to create new metal or plastic parts.

Laser operators use laser cutting machines to slice through metal, plastic, or other materials to create a wide variety of finished goods. They are responsible for loading raw materials into the laser cutter, monitoring its performance, and troubleshooting any issues that arise. The laser machine operator position safely performs laser cutting for a variety of manufacturing products.

The CNC Operator produces machined parts by programming, setting up, and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine. The operator maintains equipment, adheres to quality and safety standards, and keeps detailed parts.

Essential Functions

  • Perform typical laser cutting operations.
  • Select proper cutting programs and proper fixtures.
  • Establish proper stop location and adjust laser beam focal point.
  • Make proper set-ups for cutting operations.
  • Perform prescribed maintenance as required.
  • Perform all dimensional inspections.
  • Detect and report defective materials or questionable conditions to the supervisor.
  • May perform a variety of other tasks as production needs require.
  • Load and unload raw materials and equipment
  • Set up and calibrate accessories and equipment
  • Operate a forklift
  • Perform necessary maintenance and cleaning of equipment
  • Supervise machines as they run and adjust as needed
  • Inspect the finished product to ensure it meets the required specification

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.

Competencies/Qualifications

  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations
  • Read Blueprints & Schematics
  • Ability to comply with safety guidelines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Keen eye for details
  • Experience using measurement tools, such as Calipers, Protractors, Height gauge, tape measure

Work environment

  • Maintains production quantities, efficiencies and quality of parts fabricated
  • Positive team-based attitude and a willingness to cross train on machinery in the fabrication department
  • Lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds without assistance and Lift, push, and pull 51 to over 100 pounds with assistance
  • Work near moving mechanical parts
  • Walk, talk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Work in wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and work around fumes or airborne particles

Physical Demands

The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

No travel is required.

Required education and experience

  • High School diploma; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Minimum 2-3 years of CNC experience
  • Forklift experience required
  • Ability to lift and move 75 lbs. or more
  • Two or more years of Press brake, laser, and lathe experience
