Bioreactor Operator

Division: Warrenville         FLSA Status: Non-Exempt      Status: Full time

INTRO

Synata Bio is commercializing novel fermentation technology to process synthesis gas into high-value products. We have combined our proprietary microbial platform with industry-standard gas production and product-recovery technologies. The complete process has been operated successfully at a significant scale and offers high yields, advantaged costs, and feedstock flexibility. We are currently executing multiple projects for the design, build, and operation of commercial-scale ethanol plants.

SUMMARY

As a member of the R&D Operations Team, the team member will assist in the development and continuous improvement of a syngas fermentation process for the production of various chemical compounds. This position will work closely with other members of R&D, Engineering and Operations teams to support corporate development goals. The ideal candidate must be able to work 12-hour shift rotation including nights, weekends, and holidays.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Set up, start, run, sample, and stop bioreactors, ensuring they operate according to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and process specifications. Verify the bioreactor is clean, sterile, and functional before and after each run.
  • Monitor and adjust key bioreactor operating parameters such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, pressure, and biomass concentration. Record, report, and monitor analytical and operating data, noting any deviations, issues, or unusual trends during operation.
  • Maintain, repair, and troubleshoot bioreactors and their components, including sensors, pumps, valves, filters, and controllers. Conduct regular inspections, calibrations, and tests to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Use aseptic techniques to safely clean, handle, and sterilize equipment, with a particular focus on managing anaerobic microbial cultures.
  • Manage the use of compressed gas cylinders, including moving and relocating them as needed.
  • Operate and maintain analytical instrumentation such as pH meters, spectrophotometers, GCs, and microscopes for process monitoring.
  • Keep a clean, safe, and orderly work area, adhering to best practices for laboratory safety and participating in safety training and initiatives.
  • Work closely with the R&D team to assess how experimental findings impact technology improvements and co-author technical reports.
  • Manage and coordinate the ordering of lab materials and supplies to ensure uninterrupted, 24/7 process demonstration efforts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Recommend process, mechanical or procedural changes to encourage continuous improvements.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/COMPETENCIES

  • To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:
  • A bachelor’s degree in biology or chemistry is preferred but not required. Hands-on experience as a mechanical technician or lab technician in a manufacturing, pilot-plant, or lab environment, or expertise in microbiology, chemical manufacturing, or mechanical engineering, is highly valued.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude is highly desired, particularly with equipment such as pumps, regulators, rotating equipment, and pressurized vessels.
  • Critical thinking skills are required for troubleshooting, making operational changes, and ensuring safety practices. Provide feedback for continuous improvement of processes and procedures.
  • Eager to learn new skills and technologies quickly, and proficient in using automation tools under instruction.
  • Experience in manufacturing/pilot plant process operation or lab fermentation, with a solid understanding of handling microbial cultures using aseptic techniques and familiarity with anaerobic microbial techniques is valued.
  • Excellent observational and organizational skills, basic knowledge of biological safety, training in common lab (microbiology) techniques, proficiency with Microsoft Office products, especially Excel.
  • Ability to work safely around potent chemical and environmental hazards (including syngas), following safety protocols rigorously.

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This role is largely self-directed and requires a solid understanding of company policies, procedures, and values. Applicants must excel in a team environment and possess excellent communication skills. Team members must adhere to all safety requirements in all work environments.

This position operates in a laboratory and involves physical aspects. Team members may be exposed to chemical hazards, including syngas, moving mechanical parts, and common laboratory hazards such as heat, sharps, and pressurized fermentation vessels. The role occasionally requires lifting weights of fifty pounds and working at elevations and in tight spaces.
