Job Summary:

The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of functions related to the processing and supervision of inmates. Other duties include training new employees, providing aid to the public and outside agencies, maintaining jail facility, completing necessary paperwork, maintaining inventory of jail supplies and equipment, providing assistance to other departments, as needed, and other duties as required.

Essential Job Functions:

a. Supervises and interacts with inmates and ensures their safety and health.

b. Completes cell checks, provides medication and aid when needed.

c. Provides inmate transport to court, interview rooms, and other agencies.

d. Performs all related duties to processing prisoners and assigning cells.

e. Completes administrative work, communicates and responds to queries.

f. Provides effective customer service and submits work orders and purchase orders;

g. Performs and oversees the inventory of jail supplies and inmate property, evidence, and lost and found items.

h. Oversees the maintenance and cleanliness of the jail facility.

i. Assists in the implementation of safety procedures.

j. Provides janitorial services.

k. Appears in court when subpoenaed; serves as a witness, assists other departments, as well as outside agencies.

l. Performs related work and reports as assigned.

Conditions of Employment:


a. Applicant will be subject to a complete background investigation. Incomplete, inaccurate and/or failure to report information will cause the applicant rejection from consideration.

b. Applicant must take and pass a pre-employment drug test administered by the City of Edinburg at the City's expense.

c. Must have a current valid class "C" driver's license from the Texas Department of Public Safety with a satisfactory driving record.

d. Must be able to obtain NCIC/TLETS certification within six (6) months of employment.

e. Must be a U.S. Citizen (certification requirement).

f. Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred.

Required Education:

High school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalency.

Education Preference:

Associate's Degree

Educational Substitute:

Required Work Experience:

One (1) year of related experience.

Experience Preference:

Two (2) years of related experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities


a. Requires a working knowledge of computers, police, and jail procedures; and the operation of camera equipment

b. Communications and public relations skills.

c. Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization.

d. Basic computer and typing skills.

e. Basic mathematics skills.
