Summary

As a primary member of the classroom team, the Lead Teacher determines and executes the day-to-day classroom operations, striving for a safe and fun learning experience. This position is part-time, exempt and salaried with paid leave. Specific hours and leave are defined in the individual teacher's term-based contract.

Duties

Work with children
  • Develops and nurtures warm connections with children.
  • Current on Developmentally Appropriate Practice and Play-based curriculum
  • Strong understanding of developmental milestones, social emotional development and fostering independence
  • Careful observer and documenter children’s growth and development
  • Develop curriculum that is age appropriate and in line with our learning through play philosophy
  • Creates a daily schedule that includes but not limited to: Together time, meals, outdoor play and exploration, pre-literacy and storytelling, writing and pre-math activities. Promote smooth transitions between activities

Working with Families
  • Develops close and positive family relationships through ongoing communication.
  • Works closely with families throughout the year to share observation and assessment of child development through daily communications, teacher conferences and written developmental assessments
  • Help families with the transition to preschool
  • Comfortable with using multiple forms of technology to communicate with families.


Administrative /Staff
  • Leading a classroom team
  • Assign daily tasks based upon strengths of the team member
  • Model best teaching practices for team members
  • Works with director to oversee and manage assistants working in the classroom
  • Facilitates ongoing and productive communication between team members: Includes constructive feedback on teaching strategies
  • Maintains positive working relationships with staff throughout school.


Requirements

  • Be "Not guilty of an offense as defined in 63.2-1719 of the Code of Virginia."
  • "Staff shall be of good character and reputation, capable of carrying out assigned responsibilities; capable of accepting training and supervision; and capable of communicating effectively both orally and in writing as applicable to the job responsibility." (22 VAC 40-185-180.B)
  • Pass state required background checks according Virginia regulations, submit required annual health and TB screen forms, as well as pass the annual Mandated Reporter training and the 10-hour Virginia DSS Preservice Training (due first day of employment) and the VaDSS Health and Safety class and COVID class - both online
  • Have experience working with children ages four to fave years, preferably as a lead teacher
  • Carry out assigned responsibilities; lifting, bending and ladder use is required
  • Work collaboratively with all colleagues
  • Multi-task, organize and prioritize duties and projects
  • Be detail-oriented and flexible
  • Communicate effectively in-person, phone, written, and electronically, especially with children, families, co-workers, and emergency personnel
  • Prefer Bachelor's degree in education, nursing or recreation; experience plus education maybe substituted based upon 22 VAC 40-185-210
