Job DescriptionJob DescriptionMHI Ship Repair & Services is a major marine repair and conversion contractor serving the U.S. Navy, Military Sealift Command, Maritime Administration and Commercial ship owners and operators worldwide. Our ship yard is conveniently located in the Mid-Atlantic region at the port of Hampton Roads, Norfolk Virginia.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Analyzes and plan a job from start to finish ensuring proper and safe work methods used.
  • Reads and interprets work specifications, blueprints, technical manuals and design sketches to determine appropriate shipfitting process and required material
  • Coordinate with other departments for conduct of repairs, tests, and inspections.
  • Document and maintain all job-related paperwork.
  • Lead a team throughout the performance of a job, coordinating material, tools, and personnel.
  • Train and supervise junior personnel for conduct of operation, troubleshooting, and repair of various shipfitting processes.
  • Conduct advanced troubleshooting of shipfitting and fabrication processes and equipment using technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Generate and submit various reports for processes, personnel, and equipment/materials.
  • Performs work requiring a thorough knowledge of fabrication theory and principles, statutory codes, properties of materials and principles of operation equipment.
  • Notifies supervisor of any safety or equipment issues.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Technical or Vocation School training.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft word, excel, etc.).
  • Must have seven years of experience as a shipfitter.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of tools, equipment and machining processes of shipfitting trade.
  • High degree of precision working with minimum tolerances required.
  • Must be able to work effectively with others.
  • Must be steady, reliable worker.
