Position Summary

The Head Lifeguard/Aquatics Coordinator is a full-time position at Jewish Long Beach and the Alpert Jewish Community Center and reports to the Director of Fitness, Wellness, and Aquatics. The Head Lifeguard/Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for Aquatics operations and the safety of the Aquatics Center. The Head Lifeguard/Aquatics Coordinator supervises pool activities. This includes providing feedback and supervision to all lifeguards, swim instructors, and other direct reports. The Head Lifeguard/Aquatics Coordinator will supervise administrative responsibilities for the Aquatics Center.


Essential Position Responsibilities

  • Provide overall direction and supervision of Aquatics Center operations, including programs, lessons, and services. Ensure the safety of members and guests at the pool.
  • Manage staff schedules.
  • Train and supervise lifeguards and swim instructors. Provide ongoing training and feedback to aquatics staff; ensure all staff are familiar with emergency protocols, rules and regulations of the pool, and positive customer service procedures.
  • Ensure the pool deck is always guarded, with adequate ratios of lifeguards to swimmers.
  • Oversee the operations of the pool including maintaining pool equipment, monitoring water chemistry, and keeping up-to-date records; coordinate with AJCC maintenance staff as needed.
  • Be on call if a situation arises at the Aquatics Center; administer CPR and First Aid when necessary. Know and train staff in the emergency procedures of the pool and the AJCC building.
  • Coordinate coverage for pool, including Camp, ECE, members, and the public – including special events and everyday programs and activities.
  • Coordinate coverage for pool rentals with AJCC Reservations and Rentals Manager.
  • Maintain inventory and records of First Aid equipment and supplies for AJCC building.
  • Lead by example. Provide exceptional customer service and maintain the highest quality of courtesy, friendliness, and service excellence for members, visitors, and other staff.
  • Able to fill in and perform regular duties as Lifeguard and Swim Instructor.
  • React to change productively; handle additional responsibilities and tasks as assigned.

Requirements:

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong swimming skills
  • Knowledge of lifesaving equipment, lifesaving techniques, and aquatics programming
  • Ability to prioritize and remain organized while managing multiple details
  • Excellent Customer Service skills
  • Outstanding written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work well and efficiently with lifeguards and instructors, and other staff.
  • Ability to enforce pool rules, regulations, maintain discipline, and exercise good judgement
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) preferred
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, WSI, CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications.
  • American Red Cross Title 22 certification.
  • A minimum of three years of Aquatics supervisory, program management experience is required
  • Five years of experience as a lifeguard required
  • Certified EMT preferred
  • Certified Pool Operator Certification Preferred
  • Ability to work early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed


Supervisory Responsibilities

Provide oversight of the Aquatics Department, train, supervise, retain employees. Plan, assign, and direct work. This position is responsible for responding to complaints and resolving problems within the team and carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the AJCC’s policies and applicable laws.


Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the Head Lifeguard/Aquatics Coordinator is regularly required to climb in and out of guard chairs, stand and sit for long periods of time, and get in and out of the pool as needed. The employee must be in good physical condition to enable them to perform any rescues, First Aid, or CPR. This person is required to use their hands to handle or feel objects, equipment or controls, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear. The employee must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must have excellent swimming abilities and may be asked to demonstrate them and maintain their fitness level. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision up to 75 feet to keep pool patrons in view, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to perform all duties (physically) required to shock and de-chlorinate the pool; able to handle and be around pool chemicals.


Work Environment

Individual must be capable of handling a supervisory role over peers. Able to work on-site. Extended exposure to sunlight and outdoor elements as well as a warm and humid outdoor environment is expected. Position works independently and without supervision for long periods of time. Exposure to chlorine and other pool chemicals.
