TESTING: Tuesday - February 27, 2024. Testing will consist of Written Exams and Physical Agility. Top candidates will move to the Interview stage to consist of an Interview Panel and Chief's Interview later the same week.


SUMMARY: Performs various complex and high risk procedures and techniques in responding to fire, medical, and rescue emergencies to ensure safety to the public and citizens of Katy.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Responds to emergency dispatch calls including but not limited to fire alarms, hazardous materials, water rescues, motor vehicle accidents, and medical emergencies; coordinates response with neighboring departments and emergency response entities.
  • Drives fire apparatus and operates various types of equipment associated with firefighting, rescue, salvage, and maintenance; applies various fire suppression and extinguishing techniques; performs rescue operations.
  • Initiates emergency medical treatments; starts IV, intubates patients, and selects and administers drugs as appropriate.
  • Debriefs and creates thorough documentation and reports of incidents.
  • Participates in the cleaning, maintenance, and upkeep of fire station.
  • Verifies that all personal protective equipment is clean, undamaged, and properly staged for quick access.
  • Cleans, maintains, and inspects all equipment and tools for proper functioning; checks apparatus fluid and tire levels; restocks supply cabinets in apparatus.
  • Participates in all training for both firefighting, emergency rescue and evacuation, and emergency medical treatment.
  • Provides fire prevention education and demonstrations to schools, churches, and the general public; may participate in community events such as parades and charity donations.
  • Inspects predetermined businesses for appropriate fire prevention, protection, and extinguishment, points of egress, building codes, water connections, alarm panels, and sprinkler systems.
  • Maintains physical fitness level required to complete assigned duties.
  • This position is considered Critical Personnel during a natural or manmade disaster and/or a catastrophic event. This position may be required to provide services or perform duties for the benefit of the public and the continuity of City operations. These may include services or duties different from those performed in the usual course and scope of this position.
  • For purposes of business continuity, employees in this position are considered Essential Critical Infrastructure Workers, as defined by the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).
  • Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:

High school diploma or equivalent; AND possession of, or the ability to obtain required certifications; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.


Knowledge of:

  • Department policies and procedures.
  • Fire behaviors and suppression methods.
  • Safety policies, procedures, regulations, and practices.
  • State and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and legislation relating to emergency services.
  • Principles, practices, and techniques involved in firefighting and emergency operations.

Skill in:

  • Remaining calm under pressure and in stressful situations.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Communicating clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Analyzing incidents and developing operational strategies accordingly.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection issued Structural Firefighter certification at the basic level or higher.
  • Texas Health Department issued Emergency Medical Technician Basic level certification.
  • Valid State Class B driver's license, Exempt Commercial license preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in a fire station and various conditions while responding to calls. Incumbent will be subjected to electrical hazards, fire hazards and unsafe conditions and may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, hazardous chemicals and materials, intense heat, extreme cold, natural and manmade disasters and hazards associated with working in and near traffic; proper safety procedures must be followed including the use of personal protective equipment.
