ABOUT CASTILLEJA

Castilleja is a dynamic, diverse, and intentional educational community for students in grades 6–12 that believes in the power of women learning and women leading. Founded in 1907, Castilleja fulfills its mission to educate young women to become confident thinkers and compassionate leaders with a sense of purpose to effect change in the world. Every member of the Castilleja community is responsible for fostering an equitable, respectful, and just community. We value building and sustaining authentic relationships and work together to create a collaborative learning and working environment. We are dedicated to a program that is responsive to students’ needs and identities and demonstrates a commitment to antiracist values and pedagogy.

TEACHING AT CASTILLEJA

At Castilleja we know that students thrive when learning happens within and beyond classroom walls and when students actively witness engagement in the greater community by the adults in their lives. Employees are invited to and supported as they connect with our global programs, advise student community engagement clubs and affinity/identity spaces, and inspire new ways to bring the mission alive on campus. The World Language Department seeks an innovative, inclusive French teacher who understands that, in the increasingly interconnected world, competence in more than one language is essential for communicating with others, as is developing strong intercultural skills, and developing a global citizen’s perspective on world issues. To that effect, language teachers at Castilleja create a culturally responsive classroom culture where oral proficiency is emphasized and nurtured. Teachers make full use of authentic resources and all modes of communication and see language as a cultural vehicle to develop a deep and complex understanding of the cultures of the French-speaking world.

World language fluency at Castilleja does not stop at our classroom walls.  We have a commitment to active engagement with the communities that speak the languages students learn. The program has deep, interdisciplinary ties to our endowed Global Education Program. All Castilleja students learn about and travel to countries within the diaspora of the languages we teach. Programming in prior years has included middle school homestays abroad, work with community organizers in migrant communities in Paris, and, most recently, a partnership with a Muslim community in Dakar, Senegal.
