Northern Wasco County PUD (NWCPUD) is looking for a summer Intern for our Engineering department. This is a 12 week temporary intern position, not to exceed 90 days.

General Position Summary:

The Engineering Intern will work on assigned project(s) to assist the engineering department.  Learn and develop the knowledge and skills required to perform the functions of an Engineering Associate. Prepare routine work orders, maintain and update engineering records, assist Engineering/Operations personnel as assigned and perform routine engineering studies. 

 

Planned Projects:

            Assist with asset database development consisting of data gathering and entry.

            Update Windmill model with latest GIS map.

            Evaluate substation one-line diagrams.

            Load flow studies.

 

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:

It is essential for all employees to adhere to Northern Wasco County PUD policies, procedures, and workplace behavior expectations.

  • Prepare routine maintenance and service installation work orders.
  • Assist in the design of system improvements and extensions.
  • Maintain records as required.
  • Input physical plant inventory into the mainframe.
  • Read and interpret maps, specifications, and staking sheets.
  • Become familiar with the duties and functions of other District personnel.

 

Secondary Functions:

  • Cross train with the CADD Drafting Technician

Job Scope:

This position works with direct supervision.

 

Supervisory Responsibility:

Interpersonal Contacts:

This position interacts verbally in fluent English with internal and external contacts regarding prescribed actions.

 

Specific Job Skills:

  • Ability to learn the duties and responsibilities necessary for the projects.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions.
  • Must have a working knowledge in the use of computer aided drafting software and equipment such as plotters, printers and digitizer.
  • Must have professional communication skills, both verbal and in written.
  • Requires math skills sufficient to be able to make calculations involving fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, or other math skills normally required in electrical theory or survey work.

 

Education and/or Experience: Other combinations of education and/or experience demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to do the work will also be considered.


  • One year of college with an emphasis on computer aided drafting, mathematics, spreadsheets, databases and other computer related courses.
    • Two years of college preferred
  • Must have a valid, current driver’s license. Driving record must be acceptable and insurable by NWCPUD insurance carrier at standard group rates. An annual consent for a release of one's driving record is also required.


 

Job Conditions:

No effective protection from weather.  Must be able to work in variable weather conditions

(including but not limited to rain, high winds, and temperature in excess of 80 degrees

(Fahrenheit) or below -10 degrees (Fahrenheit).  Subject to snake bites, bee stings, insect bites and poison oak.  Must be able to work long hours in stressful conditions when restoring power during storms or other un-scheduled outages.  Commonly exposed to situations which, if handled improperly, have the potential for bodily injury.

 

Must be able to exercise good judgment, select, use, and adjust for correct body position, tools, or work aids to work, move, guide or place objects or materials.

 

All PUD employees are expected to work outside of normal business hours when required during emergency restoration activities and to accomplish other special projects.
