Lead Phlebotomist

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
The Lead Phlebotomist position requires the talents of someone able to think quickly, communicate clearly and multi task daily. The Lead Phlebotomist works with the Lab Director and Technical Director.
Responsible for overseeing activities of the phlebotomist in Central Lab and Brookdale. Ensuring all phlebotomist are performing according to best practices, and supporting all activities of the two labs. Also responsible for performing venipuncture.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
General:
1. Manges daily operations of the phlebotomist and coordinates work activities and schedules to maximize total laboratory potential.
2. Demonstrates a positive, helpful attitude to patients, personnel and physicians.
3. Supports policies and procedures in timely manner and is consistent with Piedmont HealthCare’s mission, vision and values.
Patient Care:
4. Works with all stakeholders to create optimal patient experiences.
5. Oversees and monitors patient flow, ensuring that it occurs in an efficient, cost-effective manner, while being pleasing to the patient and practical for operations.
6. Identifies and resolves work problems to create the optimal patient experience.
7. Researches and responds to patient concerns.
8. Prepares equipment to efficiently collect blood products. Maintains adequate supplies.
9. Performs venipuncture, and capillary punctures on patients. Identifies and labels specimens. Conducts laboratory tests on specimens. Enters data into computer.
10. Assists donor before, during and after donation. Instructs on urine collection procedures.
11. Cleans/sterilizes equipment, instruments and work area following safety, cleanliness and infection control procedures.
12. Inventories supplies and places orders as assigned by office.
13. Maintains patient confidentiality.
Communication:
14. Communicates with laboratory leadership, administration, and all stakeholders to ensure a system-wide approach to policies, practices and procedures.
15. Collaborates with peers to foster teamwork throughout Piedmont HealthCare.
Requirements:EDUCATION:
High school diploma or GED, associate’s degree preferred.
In exchange for associate’s degree, 3 years of health care experience.
EXPERIENCE:
At least 3 years of health care experience and prefer 1 year of supervisory experience in a healthcare setting.

11. Ability to interact with patients, medical and administrative staff, and the public effectively.
12. Knowledge of phlebotomy techniques.
13. Knowledge of clinical protocols and policies.
14. Skill in efficient and effective draws.
15. Ability to respond appropriately to instructions.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:
Moves among many outpatient and inpatient settings. Exposure to communicable diseases, sharp instruments, bodily fluids and cleaning chemicals.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to walk to various settings and to bend and reach. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and help with patient transport and transfer. Occasional stress in dealing with priorities.
