POSITION DESCRIPTION: This internship will run from May through October. This position will partner with and support American Prairie’s Wild Sky Specialist in operating the Wild Sky field activities on Ft. Belknap. Primary focus will be on the Cameras for Conservation program. Intern will be responsible for monitoring camera traps on Wild Sky enrolled land, utilizing Wildlife Insights online to organize and backup data from camera trap SD cards, ensure all cameras are in working order and checked regularly, spread awareness of American Prairie’s Wild Sky Program and present on internship work to internal and external entities. Other duties, as time allows, will include assisting at National Discovery Center, job shadowing other employees, opportunities to learn about social media operations and storytelling, help at front desk and cross-functional learning opportunities based on intern’s time and interest like assisting with bison and other field operations on American Prairie properties.


A vehicle and gas will be provided to the selected candidate to complete field duties during the length of the internship. Vehicle is to be used only for internship duties and American Prairie travel.


LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Camera Trap use and monitoring techniques.

  • Data management.

  • GPS navigation.

  • Identifying various Central Montana species based off images.

  • Experience working in an office setting.

  • Remote backcountry field experience.

  • Office experience


PRIMARY INTERNSHIP DUTIES:

  • Camera Trap monitoring and data collection on Ft. Belknap field sites.

  • Identify species detected by cameras using Wildlife Insights online.

  • Navigate to camera traps using GPS coordinates.

  • Maintain equipment for field use.

  • Maintain rental vehicle for field use.

  • Coordinate with Ft. Belknap Wild Sky partners.

  • Commute 1-2 times a month to American Prairie’s National Discovery Center.

  • Understand the overall mission of American Prairie and Wild Sky operations.

  • Attend various outreaches and event identified over the course of the internship.

  • As time allows, assist with bison and field operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • Enthusiasm for and positive representation of American Prairie’s mission, values, goals, and culture.

  • Ability and willingness to drive to work locations on Ft. Belknap, American Prairie Properties in Philips County and Lewistown, MT.

  • Ability and willingness to travel safety on foot in the backcountry.

  • Ability to do physically laborious work and exertion in variable weather conditions, at remote and isolated locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain.

  • Ability to work with a great deal of autonomy; including working independently without supervision.

  • Ability to appropriately handle confidential and sensitive information with a high degree of discretion.

  • Confident and adaptable with sound judgment.

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

  • Willingness to prioritize safety and ability to troubleshoot basic road-side maintenance like flat tires.

  • Current enrollment in related programs.

  • Strong desire to serve the community and desire to pursue a career in a related field.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, an acceptable driving record and pass a criminal background check.


Preferred

  • Camera trapping experience.

  • First Aid & CPR certified.

  • Enrolled in or completed Field Methods class.

  • Savvy interpersonal skills to build and maintain collaborative and productive relationships.

  • Strong communication skills.
