Overview

The Charlotte Lab School School Safety Officer will work collaboratively with Lab’s leadership team to fulfill our mission to prepare all students for success and wellness in college and a global workplace and will work to ensure that students, staff, and members of our community feel safe, secure, and supported each day. Based on our belief in creating a student centered organization that supports whole child development, Lab’s School Safety Officer will work across the organization to provide a variety of services to create and maintain a positive, healthy, safe, and inclusive environment. The Lab SSO will report to the Head of Wellness and Student Support, but will work closely with all members of the leadership, wellness and operations teams, as well as Lab’s diverse students and families to ensure the security of the school building, grounds, facilities, and the area immediately surrounding the school property.


Responsibilities

The Lab School Safety Officer will have responsibilities in support of Lab’s wellness & culture vision:

  • STUDENT DISCIPLINE:
    • Assist school administrators with more serious disciplinary issues;
    • Provide crisis management assistance;
    • Serve as liaison to CMPD regarding truancy issues and more serious disciplinary infractions;
    • Support students who may be entering or returning from the juvenile justice system
    • Support students with resources related to diversion programs and other relevant community resources;
  • SCHOOL CULTURE:
    • Intervene as needed to de-escalate situations that arise among and between members of our community;
    • Work to develop a more positive perception of law enforcement by developing strong relationships with students and families;
    • Assist with conflict resolution for student and family conflict through the use of restorative practices;
    • Develop and oversee a peer mediation program;
    • Lead developmentally appropriate anti-bullying trainings;
    • Develop and deliver content related to: sexual harassment, hate crimes, and other behavior trends that arise;
  • FAMILY SUPPORT:
    • Collaborate with wellness team to identify needs, research resources, and communicate supports to families;
    • In alignment and coordination with wellness team, develop community partnerships to support Lab’s efforts;
    • Conduct home visits when concerns arise;
  • SAFETY:
    • Provide daily crossing-guard services for morning arrival and afternoon dismissal; 
    • Maintain heavy foot patrol of campus to enact visibility;
    • Train and support our school leaders in developing and practicing emergency procedures, including active shooter protocols;
    • Conduct and document threat assessments as needed;
    • Contact and law enforcement as needed and document incidents in Lab’s Student Success Hub system;
    • Maintain records for all fire, life, and safety regulations and procedures.


Qualifications

Candidate MUST:

  • Be able/willing to learn how to fulfill the responsibilities listed above;
  • Be at least 23 years of age;
  • Hold a High School Diploma or GED;
  • Have three years of certified law enforcement experience;
  • Consent to and pass rigorous background investigation;
  • Have complete at least a 40-hour School Resource Officer Basic Course, or similar course;
  • Have experience working with diverse age groups, ranging from K-12 and comfort working closely with adolescents;
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills;
  • Be interested in, have experience with and/or willing to learn about restorative justice, restorative practices, and trauma-sensitive approaches;
  • Demonstrate experience in, or passion for, serving and working with diverse populations.

In addition, the Lab School Leadership Team will look favorably upon candidates who:

PREPARATION:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree in a related field;
  • Have experience and/or demonstrated success in school setting; 
  • Have experience and/or training in restorative practices; 
  • Have experience and/or training in de-escalation strategies, trauma-sensitive practices, and restraining youth.
  • Have comfort with technology and experience with Google Suite;

Compensation

Charlotte Lab School offers competitive compensation commensurate with experience and education level using our compensation rubric. All salaries are determined pending verification of experience by our Finance/HR divisions and Board of Directors budget approval. This role falls under pay grade 1S. Please note the following regarding use of the rubric:

  • Assistant, instructional, dean and counselor salaries (Grades 1-4) are determined based on 1 year credit for 1 year of teaching and/or other relevant experience. Increased pay for advanced degrees (which may include specialized leadership programs or certifications) is indicated above and paid on the basis on completion of qualifying programs.
  • Leadership salaries (Grades 5 and above) are determined based on 1 year credit for 1 year of leadership experience, and .5 year credit for each year of teaching experience. Advanced degrees are assumed, so not considered in this scale. 

The position also includes medical insurance for the employee, with voluntary dental and vision plans, and spouse/family coverage. Lab also provides access to a Flexible Spending Account for health and childcare expenses and an opportunity to contribute to a 403b retirement plan. Lab provides employees with 12 PTO days each year. Full time Charlotte Lab School faculty members also receive priority in the student admissions process.
