Full job description

The Field Electrician in the oil and gas industry is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical systems and equipment used in oil and gas facilities. This position involves working with a variety of electrical systems, including power distribution, control systems, and instrumentation, to ensure the safe and efficient operation of oil and gas production and processing equipment.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

The Field Electrician will serve as an integral member of the Electrical department team with responsibilities including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems and equipment, including motors, generators, transformers, switchgear, and control panels.
  • Troubleshoot electrical issues and perform diagnostics to identify and resolve electrical problems in a timely manner.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on electrical systems and equipment to ensure reliability and minimize downtime.
  • Inspect electrical systems, components, and wiring for compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and blueprints to plan and execute electrical installations and repairs.
  • Test electrical systems and equipment to ensure proper operation and compliance with safety standards.
  • Collaborate with E&I Manager, Production Superintendent, Construction Manager, and Workover Superintendent to identify, plan, and execute new electrical and maintenance projects.
  • Collaborate with field operators in day-to-day operations to address specific electrical needs/issues.
  • Adhere to safety policies, procedures, and regulations to promote a safe work environment for oneself and others.
  • Keep accurate records of work performed, including maintenance logs, inspection reports, and equipment history.
  • Willingness to travel to assist in completing projects as directed and participate in continued education opportunities.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an apprenticeship program/Journeyman electrician license (Wyoming) required.
  • Valid Driver’s license required; CDL preferred.
  • Proven experience (7+ years) as an electrician, preferably in the oil and gas industry preferred.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, codes, and regulations applicable to the oil and gas industry.
  • Familiarity with electrical equipment used in oil and gas production and processing facilities, such as motors, generators, and control systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to diagnose and repair electrical problems.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Willingness to work in various weather conditions and environments, including remote locations.
  • Willingness to be on an "On-call" rotation and respond to after-hour call-outs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Journeyman Electrician license (Wyoming).
  • Experience with hazardous area electrical installations and classifications.
  • Knowledge of/experience with bucket truck/line truck use for maintenance of overhead high-voltage electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of overhead transformers/reclosers.
  • Knowledge of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) used in oil and gas facilities.
  • Knowledge of VFDs used on ESP/SRP/PCP lift systems.
  • Computer competency and organizational skills for data entry and reporting.

Physical Requirements:

  • Seeing: Must be able to perform tasks requiring clear vision and distinguishing colors and depths for 75-100% of work time.
  • Hearing: Must be capable of hearing operational sounds and alarms for 75-100% of work time.
  • Standing/Walking: Must be able to stand, walk, and move around job sites for 75-100% of work time.
  • Climbing/Stooping/Kneeling: Must be able to perform tasks involving climbing, stooping, and kneeling for 25-49% of work time.
  • Lifting/Pushing/Pulling: Must have the ability to lift, push, and pull heavy equipment and materials for 25-49% of work time.
  • Fingering/Grasping/Feeling: Must demonstrate dexterity for tasks requiring manipulation of tools and components for 75-100% of work time.
