BUS DRIVER

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.

DEFINITION

To drive the school bus while transporting students, and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from the Transportation Director/Transportation Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS -- Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

  1. 1. Perform safety checks on buses; identify defects and document on appropriate form.
  2. 2. Drive School Buses to designate route according to established time schedules; transport students on field trips as assigned.
  3. 3. Supervise the conduct of students while on the school bus; review the bus rules and appropriate student behavior; issue citations as necessary.
  4. 4. Help students requiring special assistance, including operating wheelchair lifts and restraints.
  5. 5. Conduct bus evacuation drills; review rules, regulations and procedures with students.
  6. 6. Maintain trip records; count the students; document any unusual occurrences.
  7. 7. Clean interior windows of buses.

Marginal Functions:

  1. Administer first aid.
  2. Participate in parent conferences.
  3. Within the Transportation Department, perform minor custodial and maintenance functions as necessary; assist other transportation staff as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Operational characteristics of school buses.

First aid methods of techniques.

Pertinent, Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.

Standard safety precautions.

Ability to:

Read maps.

Operate a school bus.

Perform preventive maintenance checks on school buses.

Supervise pupils and implement discipline as necessary.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Maintain audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for successful job performance.

Maintain the mental capacity to make sound decisions and demonstrate intellectual competencies.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Experience operating buses as desirable.

Training:

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and successful completion of California school bus driver certification.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a California School Bus Driver Certificate and Class B-P driver license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

WORKING CONDITOINS:

Environmental Conditions:

Field environment; drive a school, bus, exposure to petroleum chemical sand fumes.

Physical Conditions:

Essential and marginal functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, stopping or bending for prolonged periods of time; light to moderate lifting; operating motorized vehicles.

ABOUT THE DISTRICT

River Delta is a K-12 district with an enrollment of 1,880. The District has 8 small schools: (4) K-6 elementary schools; (2) middle schools; and (2) high schools serving the communities of Clarksburg, Hood, Courtland, Walnut Grove, Ryde, Locke, Isleton, Rio Vista, Birds Landing, and Collinsville.

The River Delta Unified School District sits in three counties – Sacramento, Solano, and Yolo. Although it is a tri-county district, it is served by the Sacramento County Office of Education.


River Delta Unified School District is committed to providing a quality education for all students and has high standards and expectations for students' success in school.
