Director – Space Foundation Government Relations

DEPARTMENT: WASHINGTON DC OPS

REPORTS TO: SVP of GOVERNMENT RELATIONS

POSITION SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:

The Director of Government Relations plays a pivotal role in shaping and executing the government relations strategy and mission of the Space Foundation. The position involves working closely with the Space Foundation team as well as the policy makers in the Washington DC area, with a heavy focus on Congress. The Director of Government Relations will plan, coordinate and implement strategies to promote and positively impact the mission of the Space Foundation in an effort to inspire our stakeholders as it relates to the Aerospace Community.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Educate stakeholders on the mission, goals and impact of the Space Foundation.
  • Develop and implement strategies to cultivate relationships with stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to create unity in our messaging
  • Represent the organization at events, conferences, congressional hearings to promote the Space Foundation’s initiatives and foster meaningful connections with stakeholders.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Help facilitate and develop curriculum that illustrates the significance of space exploration.
  • Work with Congressional Staff on Capitol Hill in educating on the b.
  • Prepares the detailed business plans, financial models and staffing plans necessary to ensure operational and financial success at each stage of growth.
  • RepresentsSpace Foundation in public and community outreach efforts, in orchestration with the WDCO team, in coordination with the SVP- Washington Operations.
  • Performs other duties and projects as may be assigned.

COMPETENCIES:

The following briefly describes knowledge, skills, abilities and characteristics associated with this position, including any required experience, education, licensure, certification, or combination thereof.

  • A four-year degree in education, or government relations, plus five years’ experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required
  • This results-oriented individual must be a disciplined self-starter and must be flexible in adapting to changing schedules and deadlines. They must be able to attend to all details of a project, regardless of scope, and must be proactive in dealing with projects.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience managing a team
  • Ability to remain non-partisan
  • Detail oriented

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. Individuals in this position will generally work indoors and will have a workspace designated solely for them. Necessary office furnishings, equipment and supplies will be provided by the Foundation. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may periodically be required to work outdoors and would be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The employee may periodically be required to work in an offsite environment or at special events, and from time-to-time may be asked to travel on Foundation business, at the Foundation’s expense. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

JOB STATUS:

  1. FLSA Classification: This position is exempt according to guidelines of the Fair Labor Standards Act and, as such, an individual in this position is not eligible to receive overtime pay.
  2. Full- or Part-Time: This position is full-time, year-round, in nature. An individual in this position will regularly work a schedule consisting of 40+ hours per week.
  3. Work Location: This position’s primary work site is the office located in Roslyn, Virginia
  4. Regular Schedule: For Space Foundation business offices, the usual business days are Monday through Friday, holidays excepted, and usual business hours are from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. in the time zone in which the position is located. The nature and responsibilities of this position are such that it is eligible for flexible work scheduling, such as a 4-day workweek or alternate start/end times, on a consistent or recurring basis. Space Foundation’s current hybrid policy allows for two remote workdays per week.
