Purpose of the Job:
To help color the world and bring excitement in the world of flowers by supporting the breeding, grower, and product development staff with proper execution of tasks for breeding, product development, research trials, and marketing. The position is responsible for work safety, efficiency and improvements on the execution of tasks related to plant breeding and commercial trials programs. The Breeder Technician Supervisor will be responsible for promoting a harmonic, safe, and professional work environment for the team, while delivering exceptional results to support the company goals for breeding and product development.
Responsibilities and Duties:
· Ensure that all activities required for plant breeding or commercial plant varieties trials, including but limiting to labeling pots and trays, sowing, transplanting, taking cuttings, performing pollinations, seed harvest and seed cleaning, are complete on a time and quality manner.
· Schedule, assign and allocate the labor force needed to accomplish with the activities related to plant breeding and commercial plant varieties trials, including but limiting to labeling pots, sowing, transplanting, cuttings, pollinations, seed harvest and seed cleaning, on a time and quality manner.
· Lead by example a team of direct full-time and indirect seasonal employees and ensure proper work conditions, updated inventory of supplies, and proper execution of tasks for the success of the plant breeding and commercial plant varieties trial cycles.
· Organize labor demand and availability accordingly with labor requests from Plant Breeders, Trials Coordinators and Greenhouse Manager to ensure proper crop schedule.
· Engage with stakeholders on all breeding, growing, and trialing related topics by communicating, executing, and proposing operational improvements for the success of the operations.
· Facilitate the development of Standard Operations Procedures (SOPs) to ensure stability and reliability on the execution of tasks.
· Keep updated the inventory of supplies needed for the execution of tasks related with the plant breeding and commercial plant variety trials to ensure proper workflow.
· Administrate employee’s attendance to ensure proper labor force for the execution of the planned tasks, work-life balance, support for employee’s personal emergencies, and payroll.
· Adopt and execute the sanitation protocols in place to avoid plant diseases and pests’ outbreaks.
· Ensure good practices of housekeeping to keep the work environment clean and organized for employees.
· Educate and supervise the team to ensure adherence to company policies, rules, and initiatives.
· Conduct performance reviews and recommend performance-based wage increases for employees.
· Use corrective action methods to improve employee’s performance deficiencies.
· Hire, orient, and train employees and contract labor in all aspects of their responsibilities.
· Ensure best practices of Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) for the team.
· Actively support marketing events preparation, maintenance and take down.
· Report any issues with equipment or structures in the work area to the Maintenance Department or Facility Manager.
· Administrate and report Human Resources related issues or concerns.
Requirements:· Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Biology, Environmental Studies, Agronomy or any other area of study that offers good understanding of plant biology and flower morphology preferred.
· Combination of Hight School or GED diploma and 2-5+ years of experience working in plant breeding or plant production operations,
· Minimum of 2 years of experience in supervisory roles within the agriculture industry in indoor or outdoor operations for plant breeding, commercial plant varieties trials, or plant production
· Fluent in English and Spanish – reading, writing, and speaking is required.
· Certifications: Cal OSHA 10 hours preferred.
· Computer literacy and able to work with a variety of software and/or online platforms.
· Basic understanding of database inputs and data analysis.
· Soft skills: teamwork, problem solving, people management, time management, communication.
· Handles conflict situations effectively, with a minimum of noise
· Recognizes the value that different perspectives and cultures bring to an organization
· Provides direction, delegating, and removing obstacles to get work done
· Relates openly and comfortably with diverse groups of people
· Secures and deploying resources effectively and efficiently
· Flexibility to work weekends and overtime as needed.
Salary Range: $22-30/hour
Physical Requirements:
· Ability to lift/carry up to 20 pounds 20% of the day.
· Ability to push/push up to 35 pounds 20% of the day.
· Ability to sit/Sand 100% of the day
· Ability to kneel/bend up to 25% of the day
· Ability to reach up to 25% of the day
· Ability to use hands/fingers 100% of the day
· Ability to work in outdoor and greenhouse conditions up to 75% of the day
· Ability to walk on uneven floors up to 25% of the day
