Position: Laboratory Phlebotomist

Job Status: Call In/Contingent

Required Skills and Duties:

  • Responsible for obtaining blood and other specimens for laboratory analysis and also for maintaining the clerical aspects of reference lab testing. Directly responsible to the Laboratory Director
  • Daily contact with co-workers and other hospital personnel, medical staff, patients/residents, and visitors
  • Ensures correct identification of the patient and labeling of the samples. Performs veni-puncture and capillary-puncture skillfully and discretely for all patients including geriatric, pediatric, and the acutely ill and injured
  • Sorts and processes patient specimens accurately
  • Ensures continual flow of specimens to the technical areas and reference laboratory
  • Starts glucose tolerance procedures
  • Educates patients in the correct manner in which to collect samples at home and in the hospital for laboratory analysis
  • Ensures quantity of specimens are sufficient for in house and reference laboratory analysis

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Basic Medical Terminology class within 1st year
  • Obtain and maintain Phlebotomist certification through a national certification program within 1 year after eligibility
  • Obtain and maintain BLS certification
  • Must be customer service oriented
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and be a strong verbal communicator
