Job Title: Safety Specialist

Reports to: Chief Safety & Security Officer

Position Summary:

The Safety Specialist is responsible for implementing and supporting the organization’s safety and environmental programs that include performing accident investigations, root cause analysis, training, auditing and reporting.

Description of Duties:

  • Inspect Commuter Rail Maintenance Facility (CRMF), rail stations and other work sites are in compliance with safety regulations and policies
  • Investigate accidents to determine root causes, identify corrective actions and prepare required reports
  • Conduct job safety analysis to identify hazards and develop safe work practices and procedures
  • Order suspension of any activity posing an immediate threat to our employees, contractors, the public or environment
  • Examine uses and conditions of equipment and machinery and address all safety issues or concerns
  • Review accident data to identify trends and develop target areas for improvement
  • Provide safety and security training for employees and contractors on various programs, including but not limited to, fall protection, operating rules, physical characteristics and Roadway Worker Protection (RWP)
  • Manage the environmental permitting process in compliance with applicable procedures and regulations
  • Complete all other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, Health & Environment or related field; CSP, ASP, CIH or CSHM certification preferred
  • 3 years of railroad safety and operations experience in an FRA regulated environment required
  • Knowledge of the laws and regulations applicable to employee safety and occupational health and environmental protection
  • Ability to interact constructively and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with external stakeholders and employees at all levels of the organization

  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations and take appropriate action
  • Proficiency in software applications required for analyzing, monitoring, reporting and presentations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work with a diverse group
  • Must be available 24 hours/7 days a week with the ability to work evenings and weekends as a normal course of business
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. and successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug and alcohol screening and be willing to comply with the DTO Drug and Alcohol Policy
