As the Community Organizer at St. John's Community Health (SJCH), you will play a pivotal role in mobilizing and empowering community members to address health disparities, promote well-being, and enhance access to quality healthcare services. This position involves building relationships, facilitating community engagement, coordinating initiatives, and building a base that fosters positive health outcomes. The Community Organizer will be responsible for engaging patients, the community at-large, and staff as partners in identifying and advocating for local and statewide policies.

  • High school diploma or equivalent (bachelor’s degree in public health or related field preferred).
  • Previous experience in community outreach or health education.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, see computer skills below.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of community resources and healthcare services.
  • Cultural competence and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish (read, write, speak) preferred, not required, see language skills below.

Additional Requirements: - Employees are responsible for maintaining individual certifications as required by job function or by law and provide verification and recertification when requested by management:

  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to be covered by car insurance as required.
  • Ability to drive and travel by car as needed.
  • Flexibility to travel between Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Riverside Counties as needed.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed for community events.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs a combination, but not necessarily all, of the following duties:


  1. Community Mobilization:
    • Lead and coordinate efforts to mobilize community members, encouraging active participation in health-related initiatives.
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with local community organizations, leaders, and stakeholders.
    • Collaborate with community partners to create a unified front in addressing health disparities.
  2. Campaign and Event Coordination:
    • Organize and coordinate health campaigns, community events, and health fairs to raise awareness and engage residents.
    • Design and implement strategies to ensure the success and sustainability of community-driven health initiatives.
  3. Education and Empowerment:
    • Facilitate workshops and community education sessions, empowering residents to take control of their health.
    • Provide resources and support to community members, promoting self-advocacy and informed decision-making.
  4. Advocacy and Coalition Building:
    • Advocate for policy changes and resources that positively impact community health outcomes.
    • Build and sustain coalitions with like-minded organizations, amplifying the community's voice in healthcare advocacy efforts.
  5. Engagement for Policy Advocacy:
    • Collaborate with patients and the community to identify health policy priorities.
    • Facilitate discussions and initiatives that empower patients and community members to advocate for local and statewide policy changes.
    • Engage staff members as partners in identifying and advocating for policy changes and to build a culture of partnership and advocacy.
  6. Stakeholder Engagement
    • Serve as a liaison between the community and the Chief Government Affairs and Community Relations Officer (CGACRO) and support the CGACRO as needed.
    • Cultivate strong relationships with key stakeholders, including local healthcare providers, community organizations, and governmental agencies.
    • Foster open lines of communication to ensure a collaborative and supportive environment.
    • Attend government, community, and private interest group meetings to stay informed about key community issues.
    • Produce briefing memos before community meetings, and detailed reports after community meetings describing the discussions and key issues raised in various community forums.
    • Maintain awareness of community affairs and issues, reporting to the CGACRO as needed.
    • Coordinate office procedures, ensuring efficiency in routine tasks and correspondence.
    • Manage telephone inquiries, responding promptly and professionally.
  7. Data Collection and Reporting:
    • Maintain records of community engagement activities, campaign outcomes, and participant feedback.
    • Compile data on community health trends, needs, and challenges.
    • Generate reports for internal evaluation and to showcase the impact of community-led initiatives.
  8. Leadership Development:
    • Identify and nurture community leaders, providing training and support for effective health advocacy.
    • Organize leadership forums and empower individuals to become agents of positive change within the community.
  9. Other Duties:
    • Complete additional duties as needed or as assigned by the Assistant Director of Advocacy & Community Engagement.
