Note: This position is located in Bellevue, WA - 10 miles from Seattle.

 

ICAN runs a camp for children and teens who may have Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and other developmental disorders. The intern position is an unpaid educational opportunity to learn clinical skills, network, and leadership opportunities. Current affiliation with a registered educational institution/program is required.

 

Who should intern?

Do you want to learn more about children with autism? 

 

At the ICAN Summer Camp you will learn about children with developmental disabilities, gain behavior management skills, and accrue volunteer hours. As a camp intern, you will also have exposure to various health care professions: Speech Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Applied Behavior Analysis, and Physical Therapy. Interning will be an opportunity for high school students to learn about a wide variety of potential professions before going to college, gain experience working with children, and participate in a fun volunteer opportunity.

Skills and Qualifications 

  • Comfortable with individual and groups of children 
  • Interest in learning about quality programming and how to build a sense of belonging in groups 
  • Responsive and proactive communicator 
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, good judgment, patience, and self-control 

 

Intern Description 

  • Support and maintain positive environment and open communication within intern supervisor 
  • Observe Camp Counselor supervise and guide campers in the group throughout camp  
  • Learn how to facilitate and lead camp group activities with the support of the Camp Counselor 
  • Learn how to plan and carry-out activities during unstructured time 
  • Learn how to ensure the safety and well-being of campers under the supervision of the Camp Counselor  
  • Demonstrate knowledge of equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to 
  • Demonstrate understanding of emergency procedures 
  • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior
