Job Description:
Position Overview: A Childcare Substitute Teacher fills in for regular teachers and assists in the care and education of young children in a daycare or early childhood education setting. They provide temporary support when regular teachers are unavailable, ensuring the safety, well-being, and engagement of the children during their absence.
Duties
Key Responsibilities:
Classroom Support:
- Follow lesson plans and daily routines as provided by the regular teacher.
- Engage children in age-appropriate activities, including playtime, crafts, and educational games.
- Monitor and ensure the safety of children during indoor and outdoor activities.
- Supervise meal and snack times, diapering, and restroom breaks.
- Maintain a positive and orderly classroom environment.
- Promote positive behavior and reinforce classroom rules and expectations.
- Assist children with educational tasks, such as reading, writing, and basic math.
- Offer one-on-one support to children who need additional help.
- Communicate effectively with children, parents, and regular teaching staff.
- Provide feedback to the regular teacher regarding children's activities and behavior during the absence.
- Follow health and safety guidelines, including sanitation and infection control procedures.
- Implement emergency procedures and drills as necessary.
- Adapt to different classrooms, age groups, and teaching styles as needed.
- Be available on short notice for substitute teaching assignments.
- Maintain accurate records, including attendance and any incidents or accidents that occur during the shift.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- Previous experience working with children in a childcare or educational setting (preferred).
- CPR and First Aid certification (often required).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, adaptability, and the ability to work with diverse groups of children.
- Background check and fingerprinting ( required).
- Immunization records and health screenings (often required).
- Training in child development or early childhood education (preferred).
A Daycare Substitute Teacher plays a valuable role in ensuring the continuity of care and education in a childcare setting when regular teachers are absent. They must be adaptable, patient, and capable of following instructions while providing a safe and engaging environment for children.
Nice To Haves
- Associate’s Degree in early childhood education or related field of study with a minimum of 30 Credits in ECE.
- Previous experience in a classroom
- CPR/ First Aid certification
