Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic


Salary: Pay Grade 119 $48,088



Distinguishing Features of the Position (Summary)

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) will work alongside the License Vocational Nurse (LVN) in delivering basic medical care to all inmates within the Cameron County Jail Facilities by utilizing Protocols (standing orders) provided by the Jail Physician. EMT works under the supervision of the Infirmary RN.

Essential Functions

The EMT/EMT-P will be provided 6 to 8 weeks of training to include but not limited to:

Initial Intakes/Complete Medical History of newly arriving inmates

Documentation/Reports to Jail Physicians about observations and status of all inmates for further instructions

TB testing/Lab draws/x-ray orders

Standing Orders (Protocols)

Sick Call Clinic

Doctor Clinic (Psych/General)

Medication Administration

  1. Patient's Rights
  2. Medication Categories/Side Effects
  3. Administration of all medications (P.O./IM/Subcutaneous etc.)
  4. Ordering/Returning of all medications

Once training is complete and signed off by the Jail physician, the EMT will:

Interview inmates to obtain health history during classification (initial intake); follow Doctor protocols, perform TB screening test, order necessary Lab work and or X-rays as ordered by the Jail Physician.

Obtain Vital Signs along with glucose and blood pressure checks and administer medications to each according to protocols (standing orders)

Performs sick calls on all inmates on a daily basis and initiates treatment as ordered by the Jail Physician or follows Protocols (standing orders) provided by Jail Physician.

Prepares clinic for Jail Physicians or Practitioners at all jail facilities and carries out all orders prescribed.

Establishes and maintains both automated and manual patient's records/files

Respond to calls for assistance and handle life-threatening conditions or injuries by providing first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation until Emergency Medical Personnel arrive to jail facilities.

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Have a high school diploma or GED certificate. Successfully complete a DSHS approved EMS training course. Have the EMT certification from the Texas Department of State Health Services. Must have a valid Texas Driver's License.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert medium physical effort in medium work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of medium weight (20-50 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion at a keyboard or work station.


Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.


Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Exposure to damp/wet surfaces, duty conditions, fumes and odors, and infectious diseases.



This is not a Civil Service covered position.
