Pea River Electric Cooperative is a not-for-profit, member-owned electric distribution cooperative serving approximately 19,500 electric accounts. Pea River is building a state-of-the-art fiber to the home network that will serve Barbour, Dale and Henry Counties. Pea River EC has an immediate need for a Fiber Operations Superintendent. The person will coordinate construction and maintenance of the Pea River Broadband fiber infrastructure. This includes interacting with PREC’s personnel, members, customers, engineers, consultants, and contractors to instruct and operate a safe and reliable fiber network.


Job Responsibilities

  • Follow all safety rules and regulations with no shortcuts.
  • Oversee the maintenance and construction of fiber facilities.
  • Coordinate and direct work plans related to new and maintenance splicing activities as directed by engineering work prints.
  • Assist in the preparation and administration of all outside fiber contracts and serve as a contact for fiber contracting firms.
  • Monitor contractor activities to ensure compliance with contractual terms including but not limited to frequently inspecting assigned projects and communicating with contractor leadership about any discrepancies, member/customer complaints or shortcomings that need to be addressed.
  • Review invoices submitted for contracted activities based on detailed knowledge and observation of the progress that has been made on fiber projects.
  • Regularly communicate with Broadband, Engineering and Operations management to ensure that contracted activities are on target with departmental budgetary and operational goals; responsible for recommending changes regarding contracted resources to align with these goals.
  • Review in-use products and actively seek out new/alternate options for optimum results.
  • Assist in reviewing engineering fiber design and making any necessary changes to align to the best interest of the Cooperative.
  • Inspect work in progress to ensure that work conforms to specifications and that construction schedules are adhered to.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of training, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Serves as a contact for liability issues involving contract crew activities.
  • Assure overall fiber operations remain within the scope of design and deployment.
  • Must be responsive and available to assist in any way needed during major outage events for all times of any day and/or night. Will be in rotation as the first person called to work during non-business hours.
  • Maintain working relationship with industry affiliations, local, state, and federal associations, other cooperatives, vendors, and consultants, including civic organizations.
  • Must be able to interact well with internal and external members and customers, handling inquiries and solving problems. Convey professional interaction at all times, thereby maintaining positive relations. Display and encourage team effort for maximum efficiency and productivity.
  • Must be able to organize, prioritize tasks, and complete all assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Must maintain confidentiality with sensitive information.
  • Must have a working knowledge of software applications pertinent to the Cooperative’s system and/or Microsoft programs.
  • Must be willing and able to train employees in the construction and maintenance of fiber.
  • Must be able to perform quality control functions to include inspecting, monitoring, training, proposing solutions and/or improvements, and following up on results.
  • Must be able to attend periodic seminars, training programs, conferences, civic and professional events.
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of Cooperative Bylaws, policies, procedures, and safety manual.
  • Perform other work of this or any other classifications requiring equal or lesser skills when assigned by supervisor.


Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in telecommunications, fiber management, or utility operation is required.
  • Residence within close proximity of the PREC system is required.
  • Seven years’ experience within telecommunications engineering and construction is preferred.
  • Must be certified in first aid applications, CPR, and rescue procedures.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and be insurable on the company insurance policy. A Class A Commercial Driver's license is preferred.
