Job Summary:
As part of the 988/National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, Long Island Crisis Center Counselors are responsible for providing supportive listening; performing crisis/suicide intervention services, basic needs and safety assessments and providing information and referrals.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Answer 988/NSPL calls during set hours with patience, respect and empathy
- Provide crisis intervention, suicide prevention support, brief supportive counseling and referrals to callers
- Timely and accurate documentation of calls in database
- Notify supervisors in the case of any calls needing immediate intervention
- Attend meetings on a monthly or as-needed basis
Skills/Requirements:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to multi-task: handle crisis calls and look up referrals simultaneously
- Technologically proficient; able to operate Agency’s online database and cloud-based phone system
- Ability to remain non-judgmental and provide non-directive, empathetic counseling to callers across a wide variety of topics and needs
- Must have reliable computer/internet access and a secure, confidential and quiet workspace
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Human Services or related field. LMSW a plus
- In lieu of Bachelor’s degree, Associate degree with 2 years work experience in a related field
Schedule:
- Flexible shifts including days, evenings, weekends and overnights for 10-15 hours per week
- This is a remote position but the ideal candidates are located in Nassau, Suffolk, or one of the 5 boroughs for easy call access to local emergency services and the ability to come to our office in Bellmore if needed for occasional trainings/meetings.
Benefits and Salary:
- Salary : $ 22-24 per hour/after training
- Counselors will receive paid training related to crisis intervention, active listening skills, suicide prevention practices and utilization of Agency resources to match callers with needed information. Training is paid at $16/hour.
