Director of Youth Ministry

General Position Summary: This high energy and creative position requires the ability to guide Middle School and High School aged Youth and their families to become active disciples of Christ. The DYM directs a process of evangelization that includes pastoral and catechetical formation and provides primary leadership for the design and implementation of parish ministry to its youth. Along with formation staff, assists in forming parents to teach the Faith to their children, in keeping with the magisterial teachings of the Catholic Church.


Principal Accountabilities:

  • Develops sound evangelization and catechetical curriculums in evangelization, catechesis, doctrine, liturgy and sacraments, moral life and prayer that have been approved by the Diocese. Leads the planning, development, and implementation of catechetical programs for parish youth in a Sunday Night Youth Formation Setting.
  • Recruits, trains, and empowers a team of adult volunteers to create and present engaging youth nights utilizing their personal gifts and talents.
  • Coordinates a team of volunteers to prepare Confirmation Candidates and works with Parish Liturgist and Formation administrator to ensure proper paperwork and liturgical requirements are in place.
  • Ensures (with assistance of Formation Administrator) necessary administrative requirements are followed, including but not limited to parental consent, safe environment, activity reporting, budget management.
  • Develops, promotes, and maintains social media platforms to evangelize the youth.
  • Plans, develops, and implements a schedule of social activities for the youth of the parish to develop community.
  • Develops opportunities for youth to be visibly present and involved with the larger parish community.
  • Plans, develops, and implements a schedule of service activities/trips for the youth of the parish to develop their sense of responsibility to and awareness of the needs of the parish, the Diocese, and the larger social community.
  • Invites, trains, motivates, evaluates, and promotes faith formation of small group leaders, youth, and adult leaders.
  • Professional development through ongoing study, education, workshops, etc.
  • Responsible for all other projects, tasks, etc., as assigned.


Supervision Given and/or Received:

  • Recruit teen and adult volunteers for active participation in Youth Ministry
  • Under the supervision of the Pastor and the Parish Business Manager.

Working Conditions and/or Physical Requirements:

  • This position works in a typical office environment but is subject to stress due to the evolving and quickly expanding business needs, tight deadlines, and heavy workloads.
  • Must be able and willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, based on programing.
  • Successful completion of Diocesan Safe Environment requirements.


Travel Requirements:

  • Some travel required, up to 5%.


Education and Experience Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theology/Religious Education or related degree or certificate in related Ministry or Theology from a Catholic Institution or Diocese.
  • Required, 2-4 years experience.
  • Required, must be a practicing Catholic in good standing.


Knowledge and Skills Preferred:

  • Knowledge of the Catholic church, including an in-depth familiarity withs doctrine, structure, functions, sacraments, rites, and liturgies.
  • Knowledge of Catholic Youth Ministry, Evangelization and Catechesis (and church documents related to these), spiritual development, and small group discipleship practices.
  • Draw young people to responsible and active participation in the life, mission, and work of the Catholic faith community.
  • Promote active participation in the sacramental life of the Church, especially the Mass, Reconciliation, and adoration.
  • Facilitate the development of community among young people, their families, their parish, and the local community.
  • Participate in ongoing formation and educational opportunities to keep current with trends in Youth Ministry.
  • Knowledge of the application of the Catechumenal model (RCIA) model as the central method of teaching the Catholic faith
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; (written) experience with effectively communicating a message through graphic-driven emails, and print flyers and (verbal) presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Project and event management skills; able to delegate tasks, coordinate planning and schedules.
  • Possess mid-level proficiency in MS Office and Google Docs
  • Music ability a plus
