Reports To: Sales Specialist – Road Building

Department: Sales (20), Exempt

Location: West Columbia

Summary of Primary Functions:

The Machine Specialist will be responsible for the successful demonstration and start-up of Wirtgen milling machines, Vogele pavers, Kleemann, Cemen Tech and Hamm heavy highway asphalt rollers. This role is both applications based as well as technical in nature and responsibility. The machine specialist will collaborate closely with Dobbs sales team as to ensure a professional and highly productive experience is achieved while delivering Roadbuilding products for demonstration and sale. The Machine Specialist will occasionally work directly with OEMs in the commissioning of new equipment or in the resolution of a mechanical problem. The Machine Specialist of Road Building will work closely with Wirtgen Group, Kleemann & Cemen Tech to facilitate and expedite solutions to parts and service problems as to provide a positive customer experience. The specialist will collaborate with Dobbs service personnel (technicians and managers) and other branch personnel in the diagnosis of complex mechanical or application issues relative to all Roadbuilding products. The Machine Specialist will diligently support the ongoing service and support programs of Dobbs Equipment. This position will assist in the development of technicians & technical data at the corporate level to ensure the attainment of the company growth and profitability objectives are met. It is imperative for this position to develop consistency in product support expectations across all Dobbs Equipment branches. It is critical that this role provides cross functional direction, training, and motivation of fellow Dobbs product support personnel.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Field based, customer facing, machine demonstrator and application (start-up) specialist.
  • Advise customers of proper machine maintenance and service best practices.
  • Field based, customer facing, prioritize opportunities and participate in the solution of machine down episodes.
  • Serve as a hands-on Subject Matter Expert on all Road-Building parts and service activities.
  • Work as liaison with manufacturers and all departments regarding Roadbuilding product support issues.
  • This role is state-wide (SC) therefore travel and overnight stays are required.
  • Research product issues using OEM portals, technical manuals, business system, and troubleshooting techniques to help resolve issues
  • Provide technical communications and updates for OEM’s & Division Manager, monitor progression through issues and report progress & resolution.
  • Provide timely communication of solutions to Service/Parts/Sales & manufacturers
  • Advise technicians of all pertinent technical data to ensure customer satisfaction on product repairs
  • Assist in the technical tooling for service departments
  • Record solutions and communicate to Dobbs Technical Communicator as to maintain a database of repairs
  • Remains current with new machine training on each product line
  • Delivers technical training to Service Technicians as needed

  • Knowledge of road machinery and applications.


Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Valid Drivers License
  • Highly developed technical abilities across Road Building product line – electrical / hydraulic / powertrain / fuel systems, ect…
  • Must have 5 years hands on experience with Road Building products (Mills, Pavers, Rollers, Crushers)
  • Bilingual ability is preferred but not required.

Education, Skill, and/or Experience Requirements:

  • 2-3 years of customer service background with mechanical and service experience required.
  • OEM Certifications Required, ongoing training provided
  • Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel and Power Point is required.
  • Must have a mechanical background.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics and electrical systems preferred.
