FT Middle School Counselor
Join American Heritage in American Fork, Utah, for the 2024-25 school year as the full-time middle school counselor and have a meaningful impact on student success. Under the direction of the middle school assistant principle, the middle school counselor will guide students in grades 6-8 through personalized education plans and academic counseling. Counselor will engage with students, their parents, and partner with teachers, implementing strong interpersonal skills through in-person, online, and phone communication, providing a proactive outreach and support to ensure student success. Additionally, the middle school counselor will maintain records, present at meetings, and advise the students in grade 8 along with their parents on high school graduation requirements.
The middle school counselor will work with parents and students on scheduling requests and logistics. Two years of experience as an academic school counselor in a middle or high school setting is preferred. Ideal applicants will have a knowledge of student advisement and experience in counseling students within the College, Career and Life Readiness framework. The middle school counselor's expertise will help students navigate general education courses and remain informed on high school requirements.
A strong candidate will also have extensive experience in manipulating data and in using Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as other database systems.
Candidates must be willing and able to positively communicate with 300 middle school students in grades 6-8, along with their parents, teachers, and the middle school administration.
Skills and Abilities
- Written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to work with a diverse groups and individuals.
- Strong computer skills and the aptitude to learn school specific software.
- Pro-active, detail-oriented, and a self-starter.
Summary of Responsibilities
- Advise and support middle school students in the development of education plans, career and major exploration, and course selections that align with students' goals. Consult with administration regarding scheduling and document program changes. Ensure student receipt of accurate information regarding courses and teachers.
- Coordinate the preparation and submission of various reports.
- Maintain a caseload of incoming students. Maintain student records using applications relevant to file maintenance and organization of specified caseload. Assists students with course planning to help them meet their educational and career goals.
- Audit student records and graduation requirements for students in grade 8.
- Contribute to a supportive and dynamic educational environment.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Candidates must demonstrate an enduring love of youth and a desire to work in a faith-based atmosphere aligned with values taught by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Position available for the 2024-25 school year starting September 2024.
