Dance Teacher 

(Part-Time)

As a school leader in creative scholarship, LoveWorks Academy for the Arts (LWA)is a distinguished charter school in the Twin Cities offering various arts programming and embodied creative intelligence.  LWA is a community K through 8th-grade school, working alongside families, providing professional employment opportunities, and building leaders with love.

Serving 98% Black and Latino students, LWA consistently performs throughout the city and district showing the learning as practice. 100% of LWA attend high school students and have gone on to earn admission to college each year, and are often the first in their families to attend college.

As the Dance Teacher will join our Arts Team, you will be a close partner with the Executive School-wide Cultural Lead and Operation team, you will provide our students incredible opportunities to perform two seasonal showcases and two holiday-based performances.  In addition, you will offer cultural history, technique, and opportunity to review their ability to embody their learning.  You will serve as a role model to our students, holding them to the highest standards of character and conduct while forming close relationships that inspire them to give their best every day.

Responsibilities

  • Create a classroom culture of high achievement and student ownership of their learning that helps foster students’ intellectual, social and emotional development.
  • Provide daily instruction, including clear learning outcomes, well-designed lessons and high-quality assessments that align to Friendship’s curriculum and standards.
  • Incorporate into lessons creative, hands-on learning experiences that broaden students’ exposure and interests, help foster student ingenuity and require application of knowledge and skills acquired through daily instruction.
  • Provide a classroom environment that is visually appealing, rich with resources aligned to curriculum and standards and honors student’s achievement with current and accurate displays of exemplary student work.
  • Communicate to students to understand their talents, interests and needs and to convey learning expectations and their progress toward meeting those expectations.
  • Communicate regularly with families to identify students’ talents, interests and needs and update parents regarding students’ achievements and progress.
  • Collaborate with school-based staff and throughout the Friendship network in staff meetings, regular analysis sessions and professional learning designed to enhance students’ learning experience and increase student achievement.
  • Sponsor an afterschool dance or theater group
  • Accurately complete all administrative duties relating to dance/theater (timesheets, student evaluations/placements, recital forms, etc.)
  • Choreograph dances/Direct student performances
  • Working with non-performing students on other play production tasks, including set construction, scene changes, lighting, sound, and special effects
  • Exploring dance/theater work like applying stage makeup and creating costumes, along with choreography and show creation
  • Creating an adaptable lesson plan based on student levels and ability
  • Explaining body language and expression, engaging students in character development and personality projection, and helping each student develop a personal style
  • Holding rehearsals and evaluating student performances
  • Planning lessons, including written work and creative writing assignments, and grading those assignments based on the curriculum


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Successful completion of the Praxis II Exam
  • One year of teaching experience and results demonstrating high student achievement and significant growth
  • Know a variety of dance styles including modern dance and ballet/Play production tasks, including set construction, scene changes, lighting, sound, and special effects
