Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science degree (BS) in Medical Technology, Microbiology or Biology or similar degree from an accredited institution
- Certified by the ASCP, AMT or other board of registry deemed comparable by OASD(HA) or their designee (CCLM) as an MLT or MT/MLS Minimum of three years of experience in microbiology with at least one year of experience in molecular diagnostics performing high complexity testing
- Biologists must participate in the College of American Pathologists (CAP) or alternate proficiency-testing program
- Meet accreditation standards according to Department of Defense Manual and CAP.
- Perform a variety of routine and complex procedures listed in USAF Epidemiology Laboratory Operating Instructions
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
- Process specimens using the appropriate equipment, instruments, or techniques to assure optimum patient specimen integrity and positive identification throughout the test process.
- Perform quality control procedures that assure test performance, test methodologies, and equipment perform within the manufacturer's guidelines and performance specifications.
- Provide results within the Turn-around Time (TAT) and enter results into the Composite Health Care System Database for each sample. The standard is to provide 100% accurate and 100% reliable and confidential results, to the authorized facility ordering or using the results.
- Perform and document equipment preventive maintenance and function checks to assure proper test performance and result reporting of equipment to the Government within manufacturer's guidelines and performance specifications
- Perform and document tasks to meet established standards of the Public Health Reference laboratory
- Test and analyze specimens/samples by established scientific laboratory techniques to aid in diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases or to support medical research
- Performing diagnostic analysis of biological specimens for: Virology and Molecular Diagnostics, to include aspects of analysis (receipt, specimen preparation, analysis, and reporting of results.)
- Collect and assemble Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data from respiratory pathogens/pathogens of operational significance and package the data and concomitant paperwork for analysis
- Coordinate/Consult with USAF/PHR on analysis output
- Follow established USAF Epidemiology Laboratory Division accreditation policies/procedures to include staff meetings attendance/proficiency testing/competency assessments when indicated.
- Process and ascension specimens using appropriate instrumentation and techniques to assure optimum patient specimen integrity and positive identification throughout the test process;
- Report results in a punctual, accurate, reliable, and confidential manner to the authorized government facility ordering or using the results
- Perform quality control procedures that assure methodologies and equipment perform within the manufacturer's guidelines and specifications
