Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director, this position is responsible for teaching individual, often 1:1 swim lessons to children, typically ages 4- 11. This position also ensures the safety of all members and program participant, enforcing pool rules, and implementing the branch EAP as needed at the aquatics center during any swim program.

Hours & Schedule:

Typical work hours are weekdays in the afternoon from 3:00-6:00pm, some evenings and weekends from 8:30am – 5:00pm, but all members may request personalized hours for lessons.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Teach swim lessons: primarily, 1:1 preschool – youth, but occasionally adults.
  2. Prevent emergencies by scanning the pool in a continuous and consistent manner.
  1. Recognize emergencies or potential incidents and address them immediately.
  1. Know and activate the branch and pool EAP when needed.
  1. Perform assists or rescues as needed.
  2. Provide care emergency such as, CPR, First Aid, and (AED) Oxygen as needed.
  3. Complete incident reports in a timely and effective manner.
  4. Enforce pool rules, handle issues as they arise in a professional manner.
  5. Ensure a clean and safe pool environment at all times.
  6. Maintain a clear and consistent line of communication with all supervisors.
  7. Participate in all branch safety and quality drills.
  8. Attend all required monthly and yearly in-service trainings.
  9. Arrive 10 minutes prior to start of scheduled shift.
  10. Make sure all doors are securely locked when a lifeguard is not on duty.
  11. Never leave the pool unattended.
  12. All change in hours will be in writing and signed by consenting parties. Responsible for securing your own coverage for unscheduled changes.
  13. Engage in active listening with members in order to build relationships, understand each individual’s goals and interests and take the initiative to assist in the achievement of those goals.
  14. Maintain a professional image and manner consistent with the YMCA mission and goals at all times.

Required Aquatics Qualifications:

  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
  • First Aid
  • AED, O2 Administration
  • Swim Instructor training (preferred) swim instructor certification in either WSI or YSLI
  • Water Exercise Instructors – CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, water exercise certification from a nationally recognized organization: ACE, AOA, AOYP

Compensation:

  • $20.00 - $40.00 per hour
