Description:

Supervisory position performing and supervising day-to-day operations of extensive
fieldwork on potentially difficult terrain and during adverse weather conditions. Work will include
conducting administrative tasks in both the field and office; loading and unloading material and
equipment from trucks and other vehicles; operating vehicles and other large equipment; managing
assigned team members and providing clear, concise instructions regarding tasks required for
carrying-out necessary activities at each site; and directing, supervising and/or performing brush
or tree clearing and other site preparation activities using small engine equipment and hand tools;
the installation of plants, seed and erosion control materials; stewardship activities including
mowing, hand pulling, herbicide application and prescribed fire. Work requires the handling of
herbicides, fertilizers, oils, fuels and other various chemical products.


Hours:

The normal work schedule for all employees is 8 to 10 hours a day, Monday through Friday and
occasionally Saturday and/or Sunday. Supervisors will advise employees of the times their schedules
will normally begin and end. Staffing needs, weather conditions, and operational demands often
necessitate variations in starting and ending times as well as variations in the total hours that
may be scheduled each day and week.


Travel:

Light – Moderate, based on the project location in the Midwest, may require occasional
extended overnight stays in remote locations.


Daily Responsibilities:
• Supervise and direct all day-to-day operations of assigned Restoration Team
• Adhere to and enforce company guidelines and policies
• Represent the Pizzo brand of quality and professionalism in your daily work and interaction
with others
• Apply training to daily work
• The Restoration Team Leader is responsible for their own safety, the safety of their team and
the safety of the general public. It cannot be stressed enough how important this responsibility
is, as such it shall be a requirement that the Restoration Team Leader perform tailgate safety
meetings with their assigned team at the following frequency:
          o One time each week, minimum
          o Any time a new member is assigned to the team
          o Every time your team enters an unfamiliar site
          o Any time you or any of your team members are unfamiliar with any task(s), equipment or materials
required to complete the work as scheduled.
          o Any time you, as the Restoration Team Leader, identify safety concerns with the work to be
performed that you feel your team needs to be aware of prior to beginning work.

          o Communicate company philosophy, company values and expectations for professional conduct
          o At the beginning of each workday, ensure assigned team members are clocked-in, document
tardiness and/or absenteeism


Job Description:

          o Communicate daily schedule and tasks
          o Train assigned team members in standard KSAs, company policies/guidelines and leadership
responsibilities
          o Implement and maintain a merit system that recognizes team member efforts
          o Conduct disciplinary actions when required and within given authority
• Communicate with clients and/or the general public, develop working relationships with site
contacts
• Delegate supervisory responsibilities when required
• Understand and clearly communicate to assigned team members:
          o Project goals, objectives and expectations as defined by the designer and/or Territory Manager
          o Task priorities according to identified projects goals and budgets or as otherwise defined by
the Superintendent
          o Project requirements or restrictions provided within construction plans or specifications
• Ensure your team maintains a clean and safe work space at all times
• Ensure all issued clothing (you and your team members’), equipment and tools are in good
working order, ensure timely replacements or repairs as required
          o Complete basic repairs to field equipment when necessary to complete the day’s work
          o Report lost, damaged or malfunctioning equipment and tools to the Service Department and
your Supervisor at the end of each work day (even if you already repaired it)
• Inspect, maintain and operate vehicles and/or other machinery as required
• Ensure all herbicides, two-cycle fuels and drip torch fuel are accurately measured and mixed
• Accurately keep track of your daily material usage
• At the end of each work day compile, record and submit to your Supervisor total team hours
worked, total material usage, specific tasks completed, damaged/malfunctioning equipment and other
relevant information on the appropriate forms
          o Ensure that any work outside of the approved scope of services is approved, documented and
processed according to established guidelines or as per project specific requirements
          o Throughout the day photo document site issues, significant improvements, or other relevant
details
• At the end of each work day ensure that vehicles, trailers, equipment, tools and
materials/supplies are cleaned, repaired, re-stocked, organized and ready for the next day’s
operations
• At the end of each work day ensure that reporting facility is cleaned and organized

Periodic Responsibilities:
• Participate in marketing events, networking events and/or professional development functions
• Conduct site surveys in anticipation of prescribed fire and assist in preparing burn plan(s)
• Conduct GPS data collection
• Provide technical information to Territory Manager(s) when requested
• As directed by Superintendent, work directly with Territory Manager and/or project designer
to resolve project discrepancies
• Personnel Management
          o Participate in the new employee interview and/or orientation process
          o Participate in team member appreciation and/or recognition events
          o Participate in the performance review process of assigned team members
• Attend required training sessions, certification programs or participate in self-study as
required

• Perform other duties as assigned


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
• Ability to perform all job functions as they pertain to Restoration Technician team members
• Fluent in the English language (written and spoken)
• Proficient in basic mathematical functions (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication,
decimals and fractions)
• Proficient in basic geometric functions (area, volume and angles)
• Proficient in basic measurement units (inches, feet, ounces, pounds), techniques and tools
(tape measures, measuring wheel)

• Plant ID Level I passing w/85% or better
          o 10 Invasive/Weed ID Test
          o 10 Herbaceous Native ID Test
          o 10 Woody Native ID Test
• Plant ID Level II passing w/85% or better
          o 25 Invasive/Weed ID Test
          o 50 Herbaceous Native ID Test
          o 25 Woody Native ID Test
• Plant ID Level III passing w/85% or better (quiz utilizing only plant parts and taxonomic
keys)
          o 15 Invasive/Weed ID Test
          o 25 Herbaceous Native ID Test
          o 15 Woody Native ID Test


Required Certifications:
• Valid State of Illinois driver’s license
          o CDL Class A permit holder
• State of Illinois Pesticide Applicator License
• Current in First Aid/CPR
• I100/S130/S190 firefighter certification
• S290 firefighter certification
• OSHA 30-hour


Required Work History Qualifications:
• College degree in biology, environmental sciences, natural resources or similar and a minimum
of one (1) year of documented field experience in ecological restoration; or a minimum of two (2)
years of documented field experience in ecological restoration
          o Demonstrated ability to perform ecological assessments for stewardship and invasive control
          o Demonstrated ability to plan and execute large-scale planting and seeding operations
          o Demonstrated proficiency in the repair and maintenance of all small equipment associated with
prescribed fire, including hand tools, backpack pumps, drip torches, trouble shooting, fire pumps,
etc.
• Zero (0) PPE audit violations for a minimum six (6) months
• Zero (0) driver violations or reports for a minimum six (6) months


Expected Physical Demands:

Exert up to one-hundred pounds (100 lbs.) of force occasionally, up to
fifty pounds (50 lbs.) of force frequently and/or up to twenty pounds (20 lbs.) of force constantly
to move or carry objects; bend the body downward and forward with bent legs at the knees to come to
rest on knee or knees; bend the body downward and forward by bending legs and spine; extend hand(s)
and arm(s) in any direction, seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or
hands; display finger dexterity in picking, pinching or otherwise working primarily with fingers
rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling and perceiving attributes of objects (such as
size, shape, temperature or texture); ability to sit in a stationary position for extended periods
of time (driving and/or riding in a vehicle); ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the
spoken word accurately, quickly and loudly; ability to hear and perceive the nature of sounds;
observe an area that can be seen up and down or to right or left while eyes are fixed on a given
point; demonstrate clarity of three-dimensional vision with the ability to judge distances and
spatial relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are; and the ability to
identify and distinguish colors.


Expected Work Conditions:

Work may be performed indoors or outdoors throughout the year and may
yield exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid or windy conditions caused by the weather, exposure to
non-weather-related extreme temperatures or conditions; exposure to wildfire; exposure to overhead
or falling hazards such as tree branches in a woodland; exposure to poisonous plants and/or
wildlife; contact with water or other liquids; exposure to loud and/or extended noises; exposure to
fumes, smoke, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases and allergens that may affect the respiratory
system, eyes or the skin; and possible exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals. Work may be
performed in or near bodies of water, on rough terrain, on or near steep slopes. Work may require
working with or around sharp objects, machinery with moving parts and/or vehicles.
