Patient Financial Counselor

Position Summary
This position is responsible for providing financial counseling to patients throughout their treatment cycle. This includes educating patients about their insurance benefits, making affordable financing options available, and making the patient’s financial experience with BJHCHS a positive one. This position will ensure that all patient insurance and financial benefits and transactions are appropriately updated, understood and interpreted. This position will perform all HIS functions on an as needed basis. This position will assist in training HIS employees. This position will assist in developing weekly HIS schedule and HIS personnel rotation. This position will work with the billing department on current insurance and coding updates. This position will coordinate with nurses and providers for effective workflow.
Qualifications
- Requires a High School diploma
- At least four years of experience in a healthcare environment
- Must have exceptional customer service skills and be able to communicate effectively
- Prior billing experience is a plus
- Certified Coder is a plus
Specific Duties
- Register new patients in electronic medical record system accurately.
- Perform income verification for new and establish patients without insurance to verify if they qualify for sliding fee.
- Perform insurance verification on all patients for authorization prior to their medical appointments and update the system with their current benefits information.
- Verify patient demographics.
- Obtain relevant information for primary care provider (PCP) changes.
- Do appointment reminder calls and provide financial counseling?
- Communicate with patients prior to the medical appointment regarding their financial responsibilities (co-pays, deductibles, etc.) and insurance benefits.
- Ensures that patients are prepared and understand fees and payments they are expected to bring during their visit.
- Obtain all relevant patient and insurance data and update system to ensure all insurance and financial data is current at all times.
- Train HIS staff on an as needed basis.
- Meet with patients and review their insurance benefits.
- Present alternative financial methods, i.e. Medicaid.
- Coordinate all patient financial activities in a timely manner.
- Work with billing staff and front desk staff to resolve any patient financial issues.
- Handle all front desk operations on an as-need basis. (i.e. check-ins & check-outs)
- Collect money on outstanding balances.
- Scan pertinent documents into the electronic health system.
- Perform duties as outlined by supervisor, and work as a team member with Nurses and Providers.
